Caring for Those Caring for Others
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
As the aging population grows, so does the number of family members who are providing care to a loved one. According to the National Alliance for Caregiving, approximately 43.5 million caregivers have provided unpaid care to an adult or child in the last 12 months and about 34.2 million Americans have provided unpaid care to an adult age 50 or older in the last 12 months. This means approximately 39.8 million caregivers provide care to adults (aged 18+) with a disability or illness or 16.6% of Americans. Family caregivers experience emotional stress, sleep deprivation, and physical illness. Caregiving takes a toll on family members and they are often faced with giving up their employment or deciding they must look at other living choices for their loved ones. The person being cared for is often isolated and not engaged in meaningful activities despite the research showing that this can slow down the symptoms of many disabilities.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our two primary goals are:
1. Provide engaging and meaningful activities and high quality care to children and adults with disabilities, seniors, and veterans.
2. Provide education, support, and respite to family caregivers so they can rejuvenate, continue to work, and feel confident about their loved one remaining in the family home.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We provide highly-trained caregivers who provide support and assistance in family homes and in the community. We also have a weekend, overnight respite house so families can have longer break as needed. Lastly, we operate a adult day services program at a community center which includes a registered nurse, engaging activities, and community engagement.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
LAP Respite grew from a parent-based organization who supported one another into a variety of programs and services. Today, we have grown in capacity and have been able to serve a broader audience. We are partnered with the City of East Lansing, the City of Lansing, Office on Aging, Department of Human Services, Community Mental Health, and Veterans Affairs.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
LAP Respite Care has a long history of serving those in need and their families through in-home care, overnight weekend respite, and adult day services. We recognize the importance of education and support for family caregivers as this is critical to keeping families together. We also know that partnering with other community members is a critical part of accessing community events and activities for those we serve. Lastly, we know there is a crisis in the number of paid caregivers available and are working to be part of the solution.
In the next two years, we will be adding additional programs, events, and support to family caregivers; participating in work groups working to ensure we have enough paid caregivers across Michigan; and building community partnerships that share our mission and goals of making community engaging and accepting for all.
