What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Soccer

Soccer is a universal language and a powerful tool in alleviating post traumatic stress disorder and creating camaraderie among diverse youth. YALLA serves hundreds of child survivors of war and immigrant youth from Burma, Iraq,Sudan, Kenya, Ukraine, Burundi, Syria, Somalia, Tanzania, Afghanistan,Thailand, Guatemala, Iran, Columbia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as immigrant children from Central America and Mexico and other low income youth to share space and become teammates. In order for YALLA youth to play soccer, it is mandatory that they participate in YALLA's education academy. If a student misses tutoring, they will miss playing in the next match. If students do not show up regularly, or if their grades fall, they know they will be held accountable. Through our comprehensive academy program, YALLA's works to see every scholar-athlete acquire full social and academic English proficiency and pursue higher education.

Population(s) Served

YALLA's academy serves K-8 students. Academy sessions focus on English literacy enhancement through vocabulary acquisition, sentence structure mastery, reading and writing efficacy, and further homework assistance in a multitude of subjects. At the high school level, these include, college prep, and STEM education. Concentrated attention is given to ensuring success on the California High School Exit Examination. YALLA's college prep program guides students step by step through the college application process: to seek out scholarships, grants and financial aid that will help facilitate their successful pursuit of higher education. All seniors and juniors also go through intensive SAT prep. YALLA further facilitates opportunities for participants to attend local college and career fairs, linking youth with professionals in careers of interest to them and connecting them to local internships (with organizations such as Qualcomm, Inc.) and jobs in their community. Additionally, YALLA inspires and motivates high school age Scholar-Athletes with its life-skills curriculum. These modules equip participants through comprehensive job training, increase technological literacy, deepen financial-literacy proficiency while specifically directing energy toward resume preparation, public speaking skill development, preparation for job interviews and additional areas of necessary work-skills preparation. .

Population(s) Served

YALLA is especially proud of its Leadership Program, which is founded on an innovative and inclusive model that has been internationally recognized. Comprised of select Scholar-Athletes who exhibit exceptional leadership potential both on and off the field, this program serves to empower refugee and immigrant youth to be active relational investors in the lives of the younger generations of refugee and immigrant youth following in their footsteps. Scholar-Athlete Leaders represent YALLA at local city council meetings and civic functions, tutor younger generations of refugee and immigrant youth during YALLA's summer educational enrichment programs, and serve as coaches and team managers for YALLA's Peace Builders Soccer League, which serves roughly 200 refugee and immigrant youth each season.

Population(s) Served

YALLA's assists students through the complete college application process which includes choosing target schools, completing applications (with essays and resumes) and applying for financial aid.
