What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Highground Education Days
Four days of students, grades 5 - 9 from Clark County and surrounding areas. Students are given a tour of The Highground tributes, a flag retirement ceremony, various diversity presentations, and time to explore the park/museum/current traveling exhibit and mementos of their trip.
Veteran Retreats
Veterans able to enjoy several activities, great food and hospitality while in the company of fellow veterans. The goal of the weekend retreat is to offer veterans not only a chance to get first-hand experience with several activities that they could continue after the retreat, but for those that may be working their way through issues such as PTSD, a chance to find new friendships, information, services and hobbies that they can carry forward with them in their journey towards the live they desire. The weekend is open to veterans of any age and service history. Activities include: archery, photography, equestrian horse therapy, music therapy, journaling, art and fishing.
Reunion/Education afternoon
Annually, veterans and the public come together for the Vietnam Reunion/Education afternoon or the Korean Reunion/Education afternoon. (2019 will also host the first Persian Gulf Reunion/Education afternoon). Veterans of these wars are invited to join together to talk about their experiences; educate the civilians about these wars; relax; share hard times and some of the "fun" times they experienced during their military career.
Homeless Veteran Support
The Highground Veterans Park is now a central location for distributing clothing and personal items to homeless veterans and veteran homes. We expanded from a clothing drive in November to become a collection site year round and distributing items as needed.
Highground Tours
Tour The Highground Veterans Memorial Park with either a self-guided audio tour that you can get in the gift shop (free) or schedule a guided tour for larger groups. See and visit each of the tributes from WWI thru the present war. Experience the healing of the Dove Effigy Mound, hear the stories of the Gold Star, feel the bond between the Military Working Dog and his handler and ring the Liberty Bell. All of this and more are incorporated in a tour around the park.
Highground Porch Greeters
These are the first people most visitors will have contact with when they come to The Highground. Our Porch Greeters know about the park and will help visitors find what they are looking for or get them started with a self-guided tour. Porch Greeters have gone through a training, know where to find the answers and how to help visitors feel comfortable upon their arrival. This is a wonderful way to meet people from around the world who stop to visit. They will hear stories, listen to those that need an ear and sometimes just be a friendly face to sit and contemplate rough times (and good times). Friendships are formed and The Highground's mission is moved forward even more.
