What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Chapter Programs
Chapters across the United States provide local educational programs. They also conduct plant rescues, plant sales, garden tours, seed gathering and exchanges, and organize volunteers for various outdoor learning projects.
Seeds For Education Grant Program
The Wild Ones Lorrie Otto Seeds For Education Grant Program (SFE) has been giving grants to non-profits since 1996. These grants are to be used to purchase native seeds and plants to develop outdoor learning centers for youth grades Preschool-12. Grants awarded each year typically total around $4,000. For more information about this program go to http://www.wildones.org and click SFE. As of the 2017 grant year, we have awarded over $72,000 through our SFE grant program from funds donated by Wild Ones members. A total of 253 grants have been awarded as of 2018.
National Education Programs
Nationally, Wild Ones provides educational materials and website networking, as well as a central administrative office for the chapters, chapter members and a large number of members who are not affiliated with a local chapter.
Wild Ones Journal
The Wild Ones Journal, a national members-only publication, is released quarterly. It is an excellent resource for a variety of subjects related to all aspects of natural landscaping using native plant species. Highlights include member garden profiles, chapter activities, methods for controlling invasive species, and creative ways to incorporate native plants into any type of landscape.
Native Plant Butterfly Garden Program
People must complete an application to be certified as a Native Plant Butterfly Garden. Gardens must be at least two years old, and 75% or more of the plants must be natives. Approved gardens are included in the National Pollinator Garden Network's registry. Caretakers of certified gardens can then purchase a special numbered sign to show that the garden is part of the national butterfly habitat corridor.
