Mission

The Medical Education Institute (MEI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) dedicated to helping people with chronic diseases learn to manage and improve their health.

To fulfill our mission:

• We conduct health behavior research to better understand the patient experience and the interactions between patients and their healthcare teams.
• We create educational materials—based on research and adult education principles—to empower patients to manage their health.
• We distribute these educational resources at little or no cost to maximize their availability.
• We work with policy-makers and providers to create patient-friendly, rehab-friendly policy.

For people with a chronic disease, self-management is key to a good quality of life. Bit most chronic diseases – including diabetes, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and kidney failure – are complex and self-management is challenging to learn. and dia. Type 2, in particular, is both epidemic and undertreated—but has all of the same devastating long-term complications as type 1, from blindness and amputation to kidney failure, strokes, and heart disease. Effective self-management is essential: Kaiser Family Foundation research has found that 40% of important outcomes in chronic disease are due to individual behavior.

Home Dialysis Central

Home Dialysis Central is a one-stop, online source of up-to-date, unbiased information about home dialysis—in all its forms—for people with kidney disease, their families, and the healthcare professionals who provide kidney disease care.

Life Options is a program of research, research-based education, and outreach founded in 1993 to help people live long and live well with chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Learn about kidney disease symptoms, risk factors, and how to protect kidney function. And, find out about treatment options that can help people feel their best and live as long as possible if their kidney fail.

Kidney School is a comprehensive online education program for people who want to learn how to manage and live with chronic kidney disease (stages 3–5). It was developed to:
