Leonardo Academy is a charitable nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing sustainability by leveraging innovative tools and information to motivate the competitive market. By utilizing an interdisciplinary approach to sustainability education and implementation, we strive to make sustainability practical for everyone.

We develop integrative sustainability solutions designed to enhance the environmental stewardship, social responsibility and economic prosperity of organizations, corporations and individuals. We see a world filled with sustainable opportunities that can transform the way we live today and ensure the prosperity of future generations.

(1) Sustainable Buildings:
Leonardo Academy has been deeply involved in the development of LEED since we joined the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in 1999. We have been particularly involved in the development of the USGBC's LEED-EB Rating System.  Michael Arny, President of Leonardo Academy was the chair of the USGBC Committee that developed the LEED for Existing Buildings rating system. Leonardo Academy has helped may organizations quantify their emissions, identify and implement emissions reduction opportunities, and offset emissions Including both LEED consulting projects and LEED certification application reviews, Leonardo Academy has been involved in more that 700 LEED projects.

(2) Sustainability Education:
Leonardo Academy provides a wide range of sustainability training that is delivered as webinars, as on-demand webinars and as live presentation. Leonardo Academy is an accredited Education Provider for the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and USGBC. Leonardo Academy helps organizations to quantify emissions that affect climate change and health. Examples include Milliken, Apogee and the International Monetary Fund.

(3) Leonardo Academy is an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited standards developer since 2006. Leonardo Academy developed three ANSI approved standard:
(3a) The ANSI/LEO-4000 American National Standard for Sustainable Agriculture was by ANSI as an ANSI standard in November 2-15.
(3b) The ANSI/LEO-5000 The American National Standard for Emissions Inventories, offsets and Reduction Credits that covers all types of emissions that affect both the climate and human health and recognizes the value of preserving existing forest and grasslands that hold carbon.
(3c) The ANSI/LEO-9000 The American National Standard for Sustainable Gaming , which addresses the sustainability of slot machines.

(4) Greening Events
Events certified under Leonardo Academy's Cleaner and Greener® Program help them become more sustainable. Examples include USGBC's Greenbuild, GSA Training, Gov Energy and the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City

(5) Sustainable Transportation and engine emissions reduction
Leonardo Academy secured grants that support engine emissions reductions project based on both increased efficiency and use of alternative fuels

(6) Oak Savannah and Prairie Restoration
Leonardo Academy is working to restore the oak savannah and prairie restoration on its Valley Ridge Preserve for Sustainability Research and Demonstration.

Training and Outreach

Leonardo Academy provides sustainability training and education onsite, through webinars and on demand. Topics include overall sustainability, LEED implementation and certification, emissions footprints, reductions and offsets, sustainable land management, sustainable Agriculture, and sustainable standards development. 

Leonardo Academy also provides information and tools for individuals and families to increase their sustainable efforts through WorldGreen.org website, a unique online sustainable community created to help social entrepreneurs on all levels develop and communicate the impact of their green actions. By providing a forum for the discussion of environmentally sustainable materials, reduction of negative environmental impacts and increased energy efficiency, Leonardo Academy extends its knowledge-base freely to the public.

    (1) Sustainable Buildings:
    Leonardo Academy helped develop the LEED rating system and helped bring it into broad use.
    What we have not year accomplished is continuing the rapid expansion of use of this rating system as it matures.

    (2) Sustainability Education:
    Leonardo Academy has been providing sustainability trainings since our founding.
    What we have not yet accomplished yet is getting our sustainability training delivered to all those people who would benefit, including both existing and new customers.

    (3) Sustainability Standards
    Continue to develop sustainability standards and move them into broad use to maximize the positive impacts of these standards.

BIO

Michael Arny founded Leonardo Academy in 1997 and has guided the growth of this nonprofit organization to the present. Michael has worked on energy and environmental issues his entire career. After earning a BS and MS in mechanical engineering and a BA in Psychology and Russian language at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Michael worked for the Wisconsin Public Service Commission for 14 years. He chaired the State of Wisconsin committee that developed the State of Wisconsin Greenhouse Gas emissions inventory, emission reduction cost analysis, and the economic benefits analysis for emission reductions. Michael attended the first meeting that began the development of LEED for Existing Buildings (LEED-EB) in 2000 and chaired the LEED-EB Committee of the U.S. Green Building Council from 2001-2005. As chair of the LEED-EB Committee, Michael guided LEED-EB through the development, pilot testing, refinement and balloting process. Michael is a registered professional engineer in the State of Wisconsin and is a LEED® Accredited Professional. Michael also leads Leonardo Academy's work on sustainable agriculture. Michael also leads the development of a portfolio of sustainability standards using the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) process. Leonardo Academy is an ASNI accredited standard developer.
