Christians for Biblical Equality

Proclaiming God’s design for equal partnership between women and men

aka CBE International   |   Minneapolis, MN   |  cbeinternational.org

Mission

Founded in 1988, CBE International (Christians for Biblical Equality) works to eliminate the power imbalance between women and men resulting from theological patriarchy. CBE exists to promote the biblical message that God calls women and men of all cultures, races, and classes to share authority equally in service and leadership in the home, church, and world. CBE collaborates with global pastors, churches, institutions, and NGOs to eliminate sexism, racism, misogyny, gender-based violence, and human trafficking; to raise the status of women; and to promote human flourishing. We educate and advocate through conferences, publications, blog, social media, and ministry partnerships.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

CBE seeks to dismantle the patriarchy practiced and taught as biblical by Christian individuals, churches, and organizations. Through a few misinterpreted / mistranslated Bible texts, girls and women are devalued, and women’s equality and leadership are undermined, resulting in a limited talent pool and abuse. Prohibiting women from fully exercising their God-given gifts, in leadership and service to the church, home, and world, constitutes injustice that impoverishes the body of Christ and its ministry in the world. CBE International is part of God's work to oppose injustice as required in Scripture. Recognizing that patriarchy is a root cause of female marginalization and oppression, including domestic abuse, CBE works to promote the Bible's call for women’s equality and to correct biblical distortions that justify male dominance.

Put More Women in Ministry Leadership

The Alvera Mickelsen Memorial Scholarship (AMMS) is made possible through the generosity of Alvera’s family and the CBE community. Given the challenges and inequities women face in the church and Christian academia, AMMS was created to help women answer the call to ministry by providing academic scholarships. The scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance to women who are pursuing a master’s degree in a ministry field related to preaching, communications, writing, youth ministry, pastoral work, or nonprofit work. Thanks to generous donors, we have been able to award fourteen $6,000 scholarships since 2018. To help put more women in the pulpit, visit cbe.today/ammsfund

CBE International acts where Christian faith, global humanitarian work, and women’s equality intersect. Women's equality is not attainable without addressing underlying cultural and faith-based beliefs that devalue and disempower women and girls, making them vulnerable to abuse. CBE collaborates with ministry leaders and other change agents in Sub-Saharan Africa to address power imbalances between women and men. By providing culturally-appropriate biblical resources, CBE is instrumental in partnering for change globally. For more information, visit cbe.today/outreach

In the US, 1 in 3 women have survived physical violence by an intimate partner, and studies show abuse is as common in the church as anywhere else. Exploring the link between deeply held views about women’s worth and the consequences of their devaluation, CBE’s newest book, Created to Thrive, provides solutions to create a safe space where all members can flourish. This book will help pastors address and prevent abuse. Its evaluation tool will help churches uncover subtle sexism they may be unaware of. With supporters from over 100 denominations and 65 countries, CBE engages Christians with conferences, adult and youth curricula, multi-media resources, award-winning publications, a blog, and an online library of 2,000+ free resources on gender and the Bible. For centuries, Christians have relied on flawed and sexist Bible translations that contribute to the devaluation of girls and women. Thus, CBE launched an initiative to examine the biblical passages most often distorted to demean females, fueling their marginalization and abuse.

CBE recruited an expert team of women and men from diverse ethnic, racial, geographic, and denominational backgrounds to work on translating 500-plus Bible verses (70 different passages) that will provide exegetically-sound, gender-accurate, and accessible English translations from the original biblical texts. They are working to identify where the wording of traditional English translations is inconsistent with the sense of the original language.

We need $60,000 to cover the final phase. If you share the dream to reclaim gender accuracy in Scripture, please make a generous donation to invest in this vital project. For more info, go to: cbe.today/bible

Due to the declining biblical literacy among Christians and the consequent lack of awareness of women in Scripture and mission, CBE created weekly radio spots that highlight these women and show that they were created in God's image to share leadership with men.

We would like to run similar radio spots in new cities. Using radio to highlight women in Scripture and mission gives CBE the opportunity to tell more people how women are an integral part of God's work in our world. The cost to produce radio spots is $60,000 for each city. Join us today at cbe.today/radio.

CBE is developing online courses with topics such as leadership in marriage and family, Bible translation and interpreting challenging passages, and more. These courses can be completed as an individual or with a group. They serve as an introduction to topics, with options that allow for deeper learning. Students can learn at their own pace, giving them time to absorb or discuss the material before moving on.

The first course, Answers to Common Questions about Women and the Church, is free. As you will see, the content is rich and extremely valuable for educating and advocating that God created women and men as equal partners. It will change many lives by opening the eyes of those who have been misled and confused by misinterpreted Bible passages and ideals that devalue women. The annual cost is $11,000. To help us add more courses to our e-learning library, go to cbe.today/elearning.

As the largest portal of egalitarian resources, it is vital that we use all available resources to deliver the message of women's shared leadership in more relevant ways. In collaboration with award-winning film director, writer, and producer, Brandon Dickerson, CBE is creating a feature film on the life of an early evangelical medical missionary, Bible translator, and egalitarian activist—Dr. Katharine Bushnell. The film will tell Katharine’s story of how she risked her reputation and life going undercover inside Wisconsin's lumber camps to expose the government-sanctioned trafficking of girls and women.

Funding is needed to create a three-minute reel that will help us demonstrate the look and feel of the film. The cost of the reel is $11,000. Help CBE develop this important film to demonstrate the impact of women’s leadership through the story of Katharine Bushnell. Go to cbe.today/film

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

CBE International develops resources and partnerships that challenge patriarchy as a biblical ideal. CBE creates award-winning publications and blog, sponsors yearly conferences, coordinates local chapters, and hosts a website and book service to reach popular, academic, and humanitarian audiences with the biblical teachings that promote the shared dignity, worth, leadership, and authority of males and females.

CBE's objective is to reach global Christian communities with biblical resources that teach the mutual calling, gifting, and responsibility of males and females to use and develop their gifts in service to God, neighbor, and community. CBE envisions a future where every Christian has heard the biblical teachings that challenge patriarchy as God's ideal, and where men and women are empowered to use their gifts in any position of service or leadership.

CBE works beside like-minded leaders on projects worldwide to advance the shared dignity and leadership of males and females, CBE's strategic plan addresses 3 key result areas:
1. Education
2. Advocacy
3. Maintain an effective, sustainable organization to enable 1 and 2

Each key result area is advanced through measurable impact indicators to ensure that CBE's outreach is successful, relevant, and sustainable in the long term.
1. Churches become more egalitarian
a. Growth in # of women working as teaching pastors
b. Growth of egalitarian denominations
2. Growth of global egalitarian momentum
a. Growth in # of egalitarian organizations or advocates
b. Growth in % of women speakers at Christian conferences
c. Growth in # of CBE donors
3. Greater gender equality in Christian higher education
a. Growth in % of women faculty in Christian higher education
b. Growth in # women in leadership at the Evangelical Theological Society, and/or number of egalitarian scholars in leadership or published in it’s journal
4. Increased demand for egalitarian resources
a. Number of new egalitarian books in publisher catalogs
b. Sales, shares, citation, of CBE resources

CBE has been challenging theological and social barriers to women’s equality since 1988. As the largest portal of egalitarian resources, CBE collaborates with the most extensive egalitarian Christian network worldwide. Working with more than 100 denominations in over 65 countries we provide education, biblical resources, support, and leadership to advance the biblical basis for the shared authority, leadership, and service of women and men. Our members, donors, and ministry partners provide contributions for the vision and execution of objectives in each of the three key result areas (cited above), thus lending momentum and global impact.

For example, many of our global partners write for CBE publications, commission and oversee non-English translations of CBE's resources, host CBE-promoted events in their countries, and provide lecturers for these and other CBE events. Because CBE sponsors regional chapters and supports sister organizational projects around the world, CBE's message is regularly contextualized through publications, discussions, events, and annual international conferences hosted in the United States and internationally. Sister organizations also facilitate the development of local egalitarian leaders and groups to address the biblical and cultural issues related to gender and faith in a contextually sensitive manner.

CBE has expanded global outreach:
-- Translated CBE’s founding statement, “Men, Women and Biblical Equality," into over 30 languages.
-- Translated Still Side by Side, CBE's primer on women’s equality as a biblical ideal, into 30 languages.
-- Increased circulation of CBE publications, which include an academic journal (Priscilla Papers) and a popular magazine and blog (Mutuality). These publications have received nearly 50 publishing awards and are available at ebsco.com, academia.com, JSTOR, and through subscription.
-- Hosted annual conferences in domestic, international, and online venues.
-- CBE’s 13 regional chapters and sister organizations hosted events.
-- Engaged Christians at conferences around the world. Dr. Mimi Haddad, CBE's president, maintains a regular speaking schedule and teaches at 2 academic institutions.
-- CBE hosts the most expansive free library of resources on women, men, mutuality, and the Bible. Thousands of articles, book reviews, lectures, e-books, and translations of Still Side by Side are available FREE at cbeinternational.org. Lectures also reach a worldwide audience via SoundCloud, YouTube, and WordMp3.
CBE’s website receives one million visitors each year.
-- CBE adopted the Mutuality Matters podcast, offering the latest conversations on women, men, mutuality, and the Bible. It also explores the intersection of sexism, racism, and religion, and the global impact of egalitarian activism.
-- Established a partnership with the Publish4Africa network of Christian print shops, sharing dozens of books in several languages for free download.
-- Partnered with ministry leaders in Kenya, Uganda, and Zimbabwe to reach thousands of people with the good news of women’s equality as God’s design.
-- Built a sustainable financial base and skilled staff for new and existing ministry opportunities.
