Training In the Classroom, in the Field, and Online
World Cares Center provides ongoing safety and disaster response training to individuals, groups and local governments as well as faith-based groups from the tri-state area deploying to assist in recovery efforts in areas devastated during the 2017 and 2018 hurricane seasons. Lessons range from comprehensive flood safety and response such as mucking and gutting operations and including emotional resiliency to support the mental and emotional well being of both disaster volunteers and survivors. All lessons learned are sustainable and replicable and can be applied in the event of major and minor disasters and/or crises.
In addition, the organization also hosts its trainings on the Disaster Volunteerism Academy (DVA), a free and accessible learning management system that delivers the same classroom information to participants through the worldwide web.
The ReadyResponders Network™ (RRN)
While resources and interest peak at times of disaster, the work necessary to maintain connections, relationships, and skills suffers from a high rate of attrition. Such attrition causes our community to relearn its lessons and to start fresh after each disaster with only a few seasoned responders stretched beyond capacity. Why World Cares Center? We have proven our sustainability and have developed a platform that is inclusive of the entire ecosystem accessible at a no cost or low cost membership based on annual budget. We work with emergency managers, field experts and technologists to develop a system that marries ICS with functionality and practicality.
Emergency Operation Centers (EOC) are the nucleus of disaster response coordination. Governments communicate and share resources with other governments and traditional partners through this. However grassroots groups have not been included in this network. It is both time and cost prohibitive for smaller groups to invest in an independent EOC which would not facilitate communication with other local groups.
WCC has redesigned its ReadyResponders Network (RRN) as an Emergency Operations Center for grassroots group to manage their community response and coordinate with each other. Too often we have heard one group plead for a resource that another group has an abundance of only blocks away. So many groups are willing to contribute if they were only connected. From water, to volunteers, to opening the doors of their soup kitchens, the ReadyResponders Network is developed specifically for grassroots groups to share information and connect to resources.
The Ready Responders Boots on the Ground Exercise (RRN BOG)
The RRN BOG is a unique physical disaster simulation that provides citizens as well as local and grassroots leaders of imperiled communities to come together to practice disaster response skills, leadership roles, and collaboration with experienced agencies and municipalities. The exercise is a first of its kind, designed for citizens and underserved at risk communities to strengthen their response and recovery efforts. WCC successfully launched the development and implementation of the first RNN BOG in May 2018.
Responding to Disasters
From 9/11/2001, Hurricane Katrina, the Haitian Earthquake, Hurricane Irene, Superstorm Sandy, and most recently, hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria, WCC deploys to support local community response and to deliver hazard identification and disaster response training to voluntary organizations active in disaster and faith-based groups. In addition, WCC regularly equips responding volunteers with personal protective equipment to ensure that they keep safe in their efforts.
