Mission

It is the goal of Virginia Premiere Theatre to enrich local communities, enhance economic prosperity, educate youth and bring national recognition to Virginia's arts through the creation of brand new plays. Virginia Premiere Theatre is the only professional theatre operating on the Virginia Peninsula year round, being in residence at the Kimball Theatre in Williamsburg and Christopher Newport University's Yoder Barn Theatre in Newport News. Virginia Premiere Theatre helps build the future of the American Stage by encouraging new and innovative voices and producing new works. VPT helps build the audiences of the future by teaching playwriting workshops and offering mentorships, by taking theatrical educational programming into schools, by touring productions to rural facilities and buy creating mainstage programming for youth.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

· Virginia Premiere Theatre premieres new plays in a season of professional productions at The Kimball Theatre in Williamsburg and Christopher Newport University's Yoder Barn Theatre in Newport News where it hosts thousands of visitors annually from 18 counties and 6 cities in Virginia and tourists from across the US and abroad. Professional actors and directors from major cultural centers, such as New York City, come to Virginia to bring new plays to the VPT stage. VPT has hosted national and international dignitaries at its world premieres and has drawn the press from as far away as Australia and Japan. · Virginia Premiere Theatre takes its productions on the road to regional areas in Virginia, presenting new works by professional artists from across the nation at community centers, cultural centers etc. · Virginia Premiere Theatre, in cooperation with The Poetry Society of Virginia and The Virginia Association of Teachers of English, offers students in our schools and colleges first-class, original dramatic presentations that educate, enlighten and entertain. Such programs include "The Great American Poets", "The Great English Poets" and "The Belle of Amherst". VPT also hosts hundreds of students a year at its matinees and offers free tickets to students from four area universities. · Virginia Premiere Theatre conducts workshops and classes in playwriting and commissions new work in order to foster new voices for the American stage. In its five years of operation, VPT has had two of its productions published and numerous VPT developed plays go on to be produced in other areas throughout the US.
