Mission

ALIVE's mission is to provide counseling, emergency sanctuary, and other critical services to adults and children who have been impacted by domestic abuse, as well as to increase awareness in order to create a supportive community.

ALIVE (Alternatives to Living in Violent Environments) was founded in 1983 by two women with graduate degrees from Washington University who recognized the gap in services in securing safe shelter for St. Louis area domestic violence (DV) victims and their children. Because limited shelter space and community resources could not accommodate the need for emergency sanctuary for women and children escaping abusive environments, ALIVE was established. Beginning in two rooms donated by a local church, ALIVE was operated under the direction of its founders, who coordinated emergency shelter and transportation when safe shelter options were not available. Six safe home providers opened their homes to ALIVE clients and their children as needed. In addition to the temporary sanctuary program, four weekly support groups were held.

The agency was incorporated and was granted 501(c)(3) status in 1985. ALIVE has added services and resources to address community needs and client demand over the past 33 years, and a second office was established in Franklin County in 1999. ALIVE's staff has grown to thirteen professionals providing services from offices in both St. Louis and Franklin Counties in Missouri. Through our professional staff and dedicated volunteers offering over 17,000 hours of volunteer support annually, ALIVE has significantly expanded services to restore safety and peace to families impacted by domestic violence (DV) in our community.

From ALIVE's humble beginnings as a grassroots effort to support families endangered by DV, ALIVE is now a full-service DV services provider with a budget of $1 million annually.
