What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Girl Power
The Girl Power program's purpose is to provide in school and after school physical activity, adolescent health and social development services to girls ages 9-14 so that they can develop healthful self care practices and be increasingly influential in their academics and community relationships.
YWomen CAN
YWomen CAN helps women be more competitive in the workforce and gain economic empowerment through a focus on nontraditional and "green" careers that provide opportunities in high-wage, high-skill jobs. These include apprenticeships, manufacturing, construction, and career paths involving science, engineering and technology related areas. Participants include women living in the Kansas City metro area who are unemployed, underemployed or looking to make a career change. An education and mentoring component targets middle and high school girls in order to expand their knowledge of nontraditional career options.
Health Bridge
The Health Bridge program’s purpose is to provide high school girls with medically accurate, comprehensive information about sexuality and adult relationships so they can prevent unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, have dynamic and healthy personal relationships, and increase knowledge of child development.
Racial Justice Initiatives
As a part of continuing dialogues on race, racism and racial justice, the YWCA convenes interested individuals and groups throughout the KC Metro area to create programs and partnerships to address racial justice issues. Recent projects include a metro-wide Rosa Parks Essay Contest, art exhibits, theater productions and films. The YWCA will be hosting a national Stand against Racism event in April 2010.
Healthy Relationships Sexuality Program
The Healthy Relationships program’s purpose is to provide middle school girls with medically accurate comprehensive sexuality information and relationship skills so they can have strong and dynamic relationships, delay pregnancy until planned, and prevent sexually transmitted infections.
Building Bridges Intergenerational Program
Building Bridges Intergenerational program’s purpose is to bring young and old together across Kansas City to have meaningful interactions and experiences so they can develop understanding, respect and caring between generations. Building Bridges is a implemented by the University of Missouri Extension. The YWCA is one of many sites that take part in the Building Bridges Program.
Green Girls Summer Camp
The Green Girls Summer Camp’s purpose is to provide environmental, urban gardening, and healthy lifestyle services to girls ages 9-15 so they can learn about environmental issues and community sustainability, take part in community development projects through gardening and service learning, and have summer fun!
