Degree Programs: Liberal Arts and Sciences

Since our founding in 1949, Donnelly has provided students with a strong foundation in the liberal arts and sciences. All associate degree students take a standard curriculum of twenty-four hours that emphasizes written and oral communications, mathematics, information technology, philosophy and theology. Known as the Donnelly Core, these required courses are designed to help students develop effective communication, problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Because many of associate degree graduates want to complete a four-year degree, over the past decade, we have added bachelor’s degree programs in Information Systems and Business Leadership. We have also strengthened our Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programs through grants from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education, and we have increased articulation pathways to other four-year colleges and universities including University of St. Mary, Emporia State, UMKC, KU and KSU.

Donnelly has offered a Practical Nursing certificate program since 2008 and began offering an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing - Registered Nursing program in 2018. Both of our nursing programs pair classroom and clinical opportunities for hands-on learning and skills practice so that graduates are prepared to work as nurses in clinics, hospitals, home healthcare agencies and long-term care facilities. Our Practical Nursing program requires 39 credit hours of coursework completed over a 15-month period, with cohorts starting twice a year in January and August. RN cohorts start once a year in January and complete 33 hours of coursework in 18 months. Both of our nursing programs are approved by the Kansas State Board of Nursing. To be licensed as Practical Nurses or Registered nurses, our nursing graduates must also pass the NCLEX-PN or NCLEX-RN licensing exam.

Donnelly's Student Support Services program provides a variety of academic supports including developmental reading and writing courses, free individual and group tutoring, and supported study in challenging courses. For students that score just below the level for college readiness, Conditional Admission status mandates weekly check-ins with advising. For non-native English speakers, Intensive English classes teach the advanced language skills needed for college-level work. For all students, Donnelly’s Career Center provides information about internships and employment opportunities, and a Licensed Professional Counselor provides clinical mental health and wellness services. Advisors practice proactive advising and all faculty and staff use an Early Alert System to refer students needing assistance to appropriate resources. A campus food pantry assists students dealing with food insecurity and a vibrant Campus Ministry program encourages all students to explore their faith.

Donnelly's institutional scholarship program allows the College to achieve its mission of offering an opportunity for higher education to low-income individuals, particularly "those who might not otherwise be served." By helping to cover the cost of tuition, fees, books and living expenses not covered by federal and state need-based assistance, Donnelly's institutional scholarship program helps lower the financial barriers that too often keep low-income individuals from obtaining college degrees.

Since 2001, Donnelly has offered an associate degree program at the Lansing Correctional Facility. Inmates may take up to twelve credits each semester and can earn an associate degree in five years. Donnelly is committed to providing this program as an extension of our mission to serve "those who might not otherwise be served."
