What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Supportive Therapeutic Early Prevention Services (STEPS)

The STEPS program is a therapeutic preschool targeting children with needs identified through the Devereux Early Childhood Assessment (DECA) tool by measuring a child’s social, emotional and behavioral skills. Rather than focusing on academics, STEPS addresses age appropriate social, emotional and behavioral skills. These are practiced continually until accepted through neurosequential modeling (i.e., in lay terms – brain mapping). Two to three specially trained staff members serve eight children per class. Twenty (20) children participate annually. This program in Miami County requires additional space to accommodate an increase in referrals. The number of children enrolled is limited secondary to facility limitations and waiting lists routinely exist. Donated funds are needed to match funds to build and renovate a new facility.

Population(s) Served

Early childhood consultation is provided to local childhood partners (i.e., Head Start, Infant Toddler Services, Parents as Teacher, and Developmental Preschools, etc.) for the benefit of children and families from Franklin, southern Johnson and Miami Counties. Consultation with mental health professionals increases the caregiver’s confidence and understanding of mental health symptoms and effective ways of handling emotional, behavioral and social challenges. It also increases knowledge of available resources. ELC provides specific guidance as it relates to Second Step curriculum and has plans to provide training/education on Conscious Discipline and Neurosequential Modeling in the near future so that youth are getting a unified philosophy among caregivers.
