What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Fresh Rx

• Fresh Produce Prescription (Fresh Rx) is a partnership between healthcare providers and farmers’ markets. Doctors “prescribe” fresh fruits and vegetables to young overweight patients and direct them to the farmers’ markets where they can receive $25 worth of fresh produce weekly. Doctors track health outcomes, and Everyone’s Harvest provides free easy-to-prepare recipes. Nearly 50% of the children in Fresh Rx have benefited from weight loss, decreased BMI, reduced waist size, and other positive health indicators.

Everyone's Harvest Operates 5 Certified Farmers' Markets. Two of these markets run year-round in Marina and Pacific Grove, California. Three markets in Salinas, California, run from May to October.

. More than 2,000 families are served weekly by Everyone's Harvest markets in Salinas, Marina, and Pacific Grove – with more than 25 small and mid-scale farmers serving them. Everyone’s Harvest takes pride in the growing community of people who value organic food and rely on Everyone's Harvest for access to local fresh fruits and vegetables.

The farmers’ market locations serve diverse communities and low-income people. Local hospitals host Everyone’s Harvest Certified Farmers’ Markets at Natividad Medical Center and Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System. Everyone’s Harvest pioneered access to several public nutrition benefits at its farmers’ markets for everyone to access fresh, local, and organic foods.

This program’s goal is to help people discover the joy of preparing healthy meals at home. With community presentations and the farmers’ market kitchen, EH leads youth and parents working alongside a professional chef. So far, Everyone’s Harvest has conducted more than 100 healthy interactive cooking workshops involving over 1,200 family members. Fully 96% of the participants report increased confidence in preparing healthy dishes at home and 84% plan to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables as a result of the healthy cooking workshops.

What makes Everyone’s Harvest workshops unique is that all participants play a role in preparing the meal. Each participants receives a $10 produce voucher to buy fresh fruits and vegetables at the farmers’ market to encourage healthy eating at home. “Because of Everyone’s Harvest, my children and I shop together and eat vegetables we didn’t even know were edible!” reported Nancy Castellanos, Marina resident, mother of four.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The mission is to provide access to healthy, affordable fruits and vegetables through certified farmers' markets and community food programs. The vision is for every community to have a fair and sustainable food system.

Everyone's Harvest operates five certified farmers' markets and is a catalyst for health-related programs across Monterey County.

Everyone's Harvest operates innovative programs include:

• Incentives for Healthy Living makes healthy food purchases more accessible to Monterey County residents while also benefiting farmers. Market Match doubles customers' federal nutrition assistance, such as CalFresh benefits, for fresh fruits and vegetables.

• Fresh Rx is a partnership between healthcare providers and farmers' markets. Doctors “prescribe" fresh fruits and vegetables to young overweight patients and direct them to the farmers' markets where they can receive $25 worth of fresh produce weekly. Doctors track health outcomes, and Everyone's Harvest provides free easy-to-prepare recipes.

• Edible Education for Healthy Families inspires people to prepare healthy meals at home with lively presentations at the farmers' market kitchen where families join in alongside a professional chef.

This work is important because certified farmers' markets are where you can get a variety of delicious, field-ripe produce. Farmers selling directly to the public benefit from a stable market, while the customer enjoys a direct connection to the farmer – creating a sustainable food system we can all depend on. In a state that grows much of the country's fresh produce, some 39% of Californians eat fewer than 5 servings daily of fruit or vegetables. In Monterey County, a CA Center for Public Health Advocacy 2007 study reported the challege of finding nutritious food: there are twice as many fast-food restuarants and convenience stores as supermarkets and produce vendors. Farmers' markets bring this access to so many communities.

Over the past decade, Everyone's Harvest (EH) has evolved from its start-up in Marina to an organization sustaining markets and programs from Salinas to Marina, Seaside and Pacific Grove. Everyone's Harvest has a strong revenue base, and a strong network of partner organizations committed to supporting the mission.

More than 2,000 families are served weekly by Everyone's Harvest markets in Salinas, Marina, and Pacific Grove – with more than 25 small and mid-scale farmers serving them. Everyone's Harvest takes pride in the growing community of people who value organic food and rely on Everyone's Harvest for access to local fresh fruits and vegetables.

One vitally important market that Everyone's Harvest runs is the Alisal Certified Farmers' Market. From June to the end of October, more than 200 residents come weekly to buy fresh organic fruits and vegetables from local small-scale farmers. The market is in East Salinas in the Alisal neighborhood, a densely populated farm worker community of over 33,000 people per square mile, with 26% of the residents living below the poverty line.

The Alisal market was started in 1998 by the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program to address the dilemma of program clients: with limited transportation, mothers receiving nutrition education and WIC food assistance were having difficulty finding places to buy fresh produce. This work is important because in East Salinas, 63% of the residents are overweight or obese. Without Everyone's Harvest's Alisal Market, this community would have much more difficulty accessing fresh fruits and vegetables.

In a state that grows much of the country's fresh produce, some 39% of Californians eat fewer than 5 servings daily of fruit or vegetables. In Monterey County, a CA Center for Public Health Advocacy 2007 study reported the challege of finding nutritious food: there are twice as many fast-food restaurants and convenience stores as supermarkets and produce vendors. Everyone's Harvest has more work to do to increase the sustainability season-length of its Salinas Markets.
