Mission

The mission of the Black Archives of Mid-America in Kansas City, Inc. is to collect, preserve and make available to the public materials documenting the social, economic, political and cultural histories of persons of African American descent in the central United States, with particular emphasis in the Kansas City, Missouri region. Black Archives of Mid-America is an educational resource and provides access to its collections for research, exhibition and publication to honor our community heritage and to catalyze public awareness.

Horace M. Peterson III Lecture Series

The "Horace M. Peterson III Lecture Series" offers critical academic exposure from prominent academicians and researchers to the local community. Within the scope of this program both local and nationally acclaimed scholars present innovative findings that provoke thought and debate on relevant community issues.

Population(s) Served

"Community Stories" is an intergenerational oral history project led by prominent community historian Carl Boyd. This project showcases lively interviews regarding crucial social developments in our city's past and present. It provides a historical context for Kansas City's thriving urban core and allows for a dynamic exchange between community elder's and those wishing to immerse themselves in our city's rich heritage.

Our widely popular "Soul of Art Pop Up Gallery" celebrates local artists through exhibition and discussion, and serves as a venue where mixed media artists gain recognition through the sale of prestigious works of art.

This poetry series invites both local and nationally acclaimed artists to deliver performance art pieces that reflect and highlight major issues in our community in a lively and engaging fashion. The Mbembe Smith Poetry Series also includes poetry workshops that allow program participants to express themselves through the creation of unique poetry.
