Our programs

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Restoration and conservation of local trout streams.

Population(s) Served

The Mianus Chapter is actively involved in many river restoration projects and river cleanup events each year. The projects are geared towards improving water quality and habitat for trout, insects and other river dwellers.

River restoration projects take place in the late summer and include shoring up eroded banks, building in-stream structures for trout habitat, planting native vegetation and removing invasive vines and shrubs.

River cleanup events are held throughout the year.

Population(s) Served

The Mianus Chapter of Trout Unlimited oruns a host of youth education programs designed to introduce students to the outdoors and encourage them to be stewards of our local rivers and streams.

Our main program, Trout in the Classroom, serves more than 1,100 students annually in 11 schools in lower Fairfield County.

In this program, students raise trout and release them into a local stream, at the same time learning important lessons about life cycles, watersheds, stream ecology and the importance of cold, clean and abundant sources of freshwater in our local rivers and streams. By raising and releasing their trout into the local rivers, the students make real connections between the lessons learned in the classroom and the world around them.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The Mianus Chapter of Trout Unlimited will protect, reconnect, restore and sustain our region's coldwater rivers and streams through our habitat restoration projects and youth and community education programs.

Protect
- Support land conservation and protection to prevent river habitat degradation
Restore
- Rivers and streams damaged by human interactions require habitat improvements to return to their naturally functioning state
Reconnect
- Removing dams, culverts and other barriers to fish passage allows a river system to function naturally
Sustain
- Engaging our youth in watershed conservation will help build the next generation of stewards to carry out our work

The Mianus Chapter of Trout Unlimited relies on our strong volunteer core and deep relationships with state and local agencies to address the challenges facing our local rivers and streams.

To date we have helped improve several sections of the Norwalk River - removing them from the EPA's list of impaired stream segments - have seen wild trout populations increase by as much as 375% in some areas and grown our community support.
