What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Wilmington Youth Rowing Middle / High School Programs
Our membership includes participants from many different socio-economic backgrounds. Rowers come from community centers, and over 25 different public, private, parochial, and home schools. After-school program: Ninety rowers, aged 13-18, participate in an athletic program providing physical fitness training, rowing instruction, and competitive racing. ROW FOR IT!:Two hundred rowers, aged 10-16, take part in one of two six-week camps designed to introduce inner-city and at-risk youth to the sport of rowing as a healthy, fun way to spend free time. Both programs are open to all applicants on a space-available basis, regardless of income. WYRA strives to bring together youth from diverse backgrounds and helps breakdown racial and cultural barriers. Athletics are supplemented by occasional speakers on topics including: substance abuse, peer pressure, using grants or scholarships to pay for college, and other issues. WYRA encourages academic success and provides college guidance support. Computers are available at the boathouse for students who may not have access to one elsewhere.
