Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Human Life International works in over 100 countries around the world to alert the complacent, inform the concerned, and arm the dedicated. By doing this, HLI hopes to build a culture that respects and values the dignity of human life at every stage. We focus on assisting local communities to stand up to the powerful international interests that pressure them into accepting abortion, forced sterilization, and population control.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
If Human Life International is to authentically cultivate and sustain a Culture of Life, we must influence those who will impact society at every level. This is done with two approaches: reactively participating in national and international governing bodies, such as the United Nations and the Organization of American States, as well as proactively impacting leaders who have a direct and indirect influence on our societies and cultures.
HLI targets two specific groups: those in a transitional state – seminarians and students – and those in a permanent state – priests, religious, lay professionals, and families.
Working with those in a transitional state, whose vocation is still being determined and discerned, allows HLI to cultivate a Christian viewpoint, instilling in hearts and minds a love for Truth and the beauty of human life and its eternal destiny.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Human Life International's mission encompasses a complex and international environment, comprised of over 100 countries with diverse languages and cultures. To effectively build and sustain a Culture of Life and counter the work of anti-life organizations, we divide our mission territory into 5 distinct regions, each overseen by a director. These regions are: Europe (directed by Dr. Joseph Meaney and Joannes Bucher); English-speaking Africa (directed by Emil Hagamu); French-speaking Africa (directed by George Wirnkar); Asia/Oceania (directed by Dr. Ligaya Acosta); and Latin America (directed by Mario Rojas).
HLI has also established, in its nearly 5 decades of pro-life and pro-family activity, a network of affiliates who alongside the regional directors oversee, manage, and implement various pro-life and family programs in their respective countries. HLI believes it is preferable to collaborate with local leaders since they know the culture and language, and they are best equipped to confront local issues. The combined experience of our staff, affiliates, and network of allies give HLI an unrivaled understanding of the pro-life issues around the world and the unique local and cultural influences that affect them.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Abortion remains illegal in most countries of Africa and Latin America, in part because of Human Life International's work in these regions. The United States and most countries in Europe have abortion-on-demand. Progress in those areas has been slow, however there are bright spots even in Europe – such as a recently ratified pro-life constitution in Hungary.
This is the fight of an entire generation and is not to be taken lightly. Those pushing population control and abortion-on-demand are incredibly powerful and well-funded entities. They include not only International Planned Parenthood Federation and Marie Stopes International, but also private foundations, the European Union, and the United Nations. Human Life International will never be able to outspend these groups – but we can equip communities to resist them. And as the grassroots efforts HLI supports continue to spread, the tide will begin to turn in elections and pro-life leaders will naturally begin replacing the elected officials that pander to the abortion and population control industries.
