Mission Statement

B&O Railroad Museum Mission: Comprising the oldest and most comprehensive collection of railroad history in the Western Hemisphere, the B&O Railroad Museum, Inc. is a unique cultural and educational asset for Baltimore, the Mid-Atlantic region and our entire nation. With an unparalleled roster of 19th and 20th century railroad equipment and cars, original shop buildings and surviving tracks at this historic 1828 Mount Clare site, the museum has integrated both resources and opportunity to present virtually every aspect of American railroad development and its subsequent impact on our society, culture and economy to the American public. The mission statement of the B&O Railroad Museum, Inc. adopted in its Long Range Plan by the museum's Board of Directors on March 27, 1990 directs the museum (1) to preserve the physical legacy and experience of American railroading, and to interpret and present that history to the widest possible audience, and (2) to develop programs that broaden and deepen public appreciation of the past, present and future significance of the railroad industry in the development of American life, especially in the City of Baltimore, State of Maryland, and the surrounding region.
