What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Paul G. Rogers Memorial Scholars Program

The Paul G. Rogers Memorial Health Policy Analysis and Advocacy Scholars Program is an unpaid internship program designed to provide students, particularly graduate and law students, with an opportunity to engage actively in the health policy debate, learn about non-profit management, and have a hand in the formation and implementation of America’s health policy. Selected candidates are expected to work a full time schedule and a minimum four month commitment is necessary before being selected.

The program is named in honor of the Coalition’s long time colleague and distinguished health care advocate Paul G. Rogers, Co-Chair of the National Coalition on Health Care from 1990-2008. Before becoming one of NCHC’s founding chairmen, Rogers represented the 11th district of Florida in the U.S. Congress between 1955 and 1979, and served as chair of the House Subcommittee on Health and the Environment from 1971-79 before joining the law firm of Hogan & Hartson. In no small part due to his inspired guidance, NCHC today not only is the nation’s oldest, and most broadly representative non-partisan health alliance but is playing a critical role in the effort to achieve affordable, fiscally responsible, and sustainable health care for America.

Successful candidates will become part of a dynamic collaborative work environment in which one is expected to work both independently and as part of a team. Activities will vary based upon the successful candidates’ interests, background and experience but may include legal, legislative, or economic research and analysis; communications; public education and policy advocacy campaigns; data collection; provision of training and technical assistance; or membership services. Given the rigorously non-partisan nature of the Coalition, as well as its earned and deserved reputation as an objective source of information and analysis, those selected to participate in the program will have a unique opportunity to work with thought leaders, Executive Branch officials, Members of Congress and their staffs, business and industry leaders and a wide variety of health care providers and policy experts, as we engage in the current health care reform debate and subsequent policy implementation process.
