Mission
Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) is the inappropriate backwashing of stomach contents into the esophagus. If affects up to 7 million children in the US. In pediatric patients, GER is sometimes called "colic" and may range in severity from mild to life-threatening. Symptoms and complications may include: frequent night waking; inconsolable crying; copious spitting up or vomiting; choking; failure to thrive; aversion to eating; esophageal strictures; asthma; aspiration pneumonia; apnea; and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. The proportion of infants with significant GER is approximately one in twenty. Specific home-care techniques and an opportunity to learn from other parents can greatly affect the child's health.

Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
PAGER offers information via non-technical brochures, descriptions of tests and procedures, practical home-care techniques, medical journal articles and video tapes. PAGER's newsletter, "Reflux Digest", has been commended for its unique blend of practical information, research updates, prefessional input and irreverent humor. Parent to parent support and advice from Expert parents is available at monthly support meetings and on PAGER's Web site, via mail or e-mail, on the phone and through informal networking. PAGER is collaborating with a genetic research team to explore the genetics of pediatric GER. PAGER is actively recruiting participants for this study. In 2008, we started a www.reflujoenninos.org
