What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Community Strengthening; National Conference; Technical Assistance; Youth Program
Community Strengthening/Technical Assistance: The Community Strengthening program provides resources, technical assistance, and training to organizations and individuals to meet the needs of their local Hmong American community. Hmong National Conference: Each year, HND hosts a Hmong National Conference that brings together professionals, community members, politicians, scholars, businesses, youth, and decision makers to network, share, and learn about the community's challenges, as well as to celebrate the community's accomplishments. This event strives to increase the capacity of Hmong persons and persons serving the Hmong community; to mobilize the Hmong community to be more active in the civic process; to develop the leadership capacity of Hmong youth; and, to ensure the broad dissemination of Hmong scholarly work. Youth: The Youth program focuses on HND's commitment to build capacity of the next generation of Hmong leaders through internship opportunities at the Washington, DC headquarters and educational scholarships. Leadership Development: The Leadership Development program is a dynamic opportunity for 20 Hmong men and women from across the country to come together to learn and develop leadership skills; put their newly learned skills in action; and build relationships across Hmong communities for the benefit of the individual participants and the Hmong community. Advocacy and Resources: As the only national Hmong nonprofit organization in Washington, DC, HND advocates on behalf of, strengthens the voice of, and raises the visibility of the Hmong American community on the national level. Educating our Policy Makers and the greater American public on national issues of importance to Hmong Americans is essential to achieving HND's vision. Some recent advocacy efforts include: immigration legislation; citizenship/naturalization; increased access to quality mental health care in the Hmong community; financial crises & civil rights issues facing Hmong Poultry Farmers; and last, but not least, providing information and referrals to federal agencies to improve access to federal programs. Family Dynamics - Mental Health: HND is currently working in conjunction with a National Advisory Committee and Hmong and non-Hmong organizations to conduct a community needs assessment and develop a program model for a Family Dynamics - Mental Health program.
