What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Free and Direct Legal Services

Through our legal services program, we assist members of the LGBTQ military and veteran community with discharge upgrades, legal name changes and a wide range of other legal issues.

Legal Help Desk: We assist the LGBTQ military and veteran community on may legal issues — from bias and unequal treatment to access to benefits.

Restore Honor, Restore Dignity: We assist lesbian, gay and bisexual veterans who were discharged under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and prior policies in removing offensive evidence of those defunct policies from DD214s. We also assist transgender veterans in changing the name and gender marker on their military records.

Direct Representation: We assist individuals who may need direct legal representation in administrative separation and other disciplinary matters, court martial proceedings, and other legal issues related to sexual orientation, gender identity or HIV status.

Lawsuits: As of Feb 2020, we currently have four high-profile lawsuits challenging discriminatory policies impacting the LGBTQ military and veteran community and service members living with HIV.

We are proud to support the LGBTQ military and veteran community through our local chapters. Our chapters facilitate opportunities for mutual support, camaraderie and leadership development for LGBTQ service members, veterans, military spouses and family members.

With a network of more than 80 chapters across the country and around the world, we’re providing a vitally important space for our modern military community to connect and support each other. Our chapters have easy access to the services and resources provided by MMAA, including assistance with Pride activities, “faMMAAly” dinners, community service projects and more.

We are committed to education, advocacy and support for our modern military spouses and their families, and our scholarship is a key tool in our mission to support those who are often overlooked and under appreciated. Up to 10 scholarships are awarded each year. Scholarships range between $1,000 to $2,500 each.

We created our Rainbow Shield program to bridge the gap in culturally resilient services for the LGBTQ and HIV+ military and veteran community. Rainbow Shield is an online certification program that educates community service providers and advocates through an initial certification training and yearly continuing education trainings. The goal of the Rainbow Shield program is to end negative experiences in service and advocacy settings based on sexual orientation, gender identity and serostatus for service members, veterans and their families.

We recognize that standards of care and community needs are always changing. New developments in best practices for and research on service members, veterans, military families, LGBTQ people and people living with HIV are constantly yielding new insights that we incorporate into the Rainbow Shield program, especially in our trainings and our quarterly newsletter. We also provide an important forum for community service providers and advocates to communicate with experts at MMAA and with each other to enhance the quality of services and advocacy that have been lacking in our community for too long.

The program is open to all community service providers and advocates. We can also provide private training for organizations with at least 15 people interested in becoming certified.

MilPride is an MMAA program dedicated to military families with LGBTQ youth. Led by two military spouses and mothers of transgender girls, MilPride is committed to ensuring no matter where you are stationed, you and your family never feel alone.

MilPride is designed to be a resource and support network helping these modern military families navigate the unique challenges of military service.

Our Modern Military Survey is a crucially important tool in ensuring the LGBTQ military and veteran community is heard as we advocate in the Pentagon, on Capitol Hill and beyond. As a member of the LGBTQ military and veteran community, your insight will ensure that we’re able to better serve our modern military families through education, advocacy and support.

Modern Military Magazine — the voice of the LGBTQ military and veteran community — is a powerful tool in our mission to advance fairness and equality for the LGBTQ military and veteran community.
