What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
American Values Institute
American Values Institute, a project of the Institute for America's
Future, seeks to address the issue of unconscious racial bias through
linking academic work to a communications strategy as a way to begin to
address the harmful frames about race that exist in society. AVI is
developing a communications campaign anchored in core insights on how
our unconscious mind reacts to race as well as a campaign to educate
cultural and media influencers and engage the mainstream population in a
public dialogue. The project is also conducting several research
projects to challenge harmful frames about race that are either
increasing racial anxiety or inhibiting our community from addressing
issues based on race.
America’s Future Now! Conference
Each year, the Institute for America's Future organizes and
hosts the premier progressive conference of the year. America's Future
Now! (formerly take back America) brings together progressives from
across the country, from varying sectors of our movement - students,
labor, activists, academics, state politicians, policy experts and
bloggers - to strategize, network, share ideas, and seek inspiration
about the best ways to move our movement forward.
Financial Reform
The Institute for America's Future, has been deeply involved in the
financial reform debate since its emergence as a national priority. IAF
co-director Robert Borosage played a key role in the establishment of
the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission. IAF blogger Richard Eskow and
former IAF blogger Zach Carter tracked the Commission's proceedings,
providing crucial investigative exposure. The IAF team followed the
development of federal legislation, while providing daily analysis,
coverage, talking points and summaries of the outrages that brought our
economy to the brink in 2008. As a result, IAF has become one of the
most prominent outlets covering Wall Street reform, and has played a
leading role in messaging, educating activists, exposing Wall Street
crimes and calling for key reforms.
Jobs and Growth
IAF is a progressive leader in establishing a jobs agenda in the
national debate to address the jobs crisis facing the country. IAF's
project is developing the messaging and agenda that will get all
Americans back to work. We are pushing for a long-term public investment
program that can build strong new green industries that will assure
that America will have a new generation of good jobs and a sustainable
economic future. Our goal is to develop a long-term strategy for
generating a widely shared prosperity.
IAF is
working with a virtual network of experts to make the positive case for
continued, high levels of strategic public investment that can sustain
robust and balanced growth (after the recovery), sustain continuing
public revenues through progressive taxes, and expand and strengthen
America's social insurance system for the young, for the elderly, and
for all of us in between. As contrasted with the conservative vision of
slashing "entitlements" and formenting generational warfare, our vision -
which we will share with progressive networks - is a positive one of
economic transformation that leads to generational solidarity.
Making it in America
Our "Making it in America" project exists to foster a broad public
debate about investing in growth, jobs, innovation and manufacturing in
America, with an emphasis on reviving manufacturing as a key element of
the new economy.
