What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Big Brothers Big Sisters'One-To-One life-changing, proven mentoring services comprise a positive, broad-based program, which focuses on meeting a child's basic developmental needs. I. Programs include A) High Risk Initiative, which focuses on the needs of vulnerable Washington regional youth from high-crime communities; B) the Bigs in Blue Program, which links the Metropolitan Police Department with vulnerable high-risk youth with law enforcement professionals; C)the Hermanos y Hermanas Mayores Latino Outreach Initiative, which aims to assist Latino youth to develop into responsible adults through bilingual mentors; D) Amachi Faith-Based Initiative provides faith-based mentors for children of parents who are incarcerated, on probation or parole. II. Services to Single Parents -providing vital services, including advocacy, crisis intervention and resource referrals by professional casework staff members, to single parents and their families is a primary component of Big Brothers Big Sisters' mission.
III. Big Brothers Big Sisters in Schools School-Based Services puts caring volunteers in the lives of children in need. Mentors are engaged from corporations, civic groups, high schools and colleges, the military and service clubs. Carefully chosen volunteers are linked with elementary or middle school students to create a match that meets at least one hour weekly during or after the school day.
A) Building Positive Futures Program has a teen pregnancy prevention focus and is open to at-risk children from 10-14 years old in Washington, DC. A variety of teaching methods engage the young participants in individual and group activities in this after-school health curriculum. IV. "Pass It On" Diversity Recruitment Campaign recruits mentors who reflect our culturally diverse metropolitan area and engages mentors who are interested in "passing on" important cultural values and traditions to children in need.
