Mission

ACS seeks to bring about a democratic alternative for Afghanistan that opposes violence and extremism and promotes the rebirth of civil society. We envision a society based on the rule of law, where participation by ordinary citizens, including women, can have an effect. Working across lines of ethnicity, gender and tribal affiliation, we are dedicated to the notion that political performance should be measured in terms of substantive improvements in people's lives. By forging direct links with scholars, experts, ordinary citizens and schoolchildren in other countries we hope to promote cross-cultural understanding so a unified Afghanistan can take its place in the community of nations.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Afghans for Civil Society's programs have included one of Afghansitans more successful women's income generation programs, humanitarian aid shipments of school supplies, medical supplies and equipment, vitamins, blankets and other necessary basic human needs. Our programs have included women's discussion groups, assistance with reconstruction efforts, educational assistance, vocational training, launching the first independent radio station in southern Afghanistan, leadership training, focus groups and health initiatives. As the many desperate needs arise, we attempt to assist in the various areas. Our Womens Income Generation Program (WIG) is now being converted to "Kandahar Treasures", headed by our former Field Director Rangina Hamidi. The ultimate goal of our program was to become a "for profit" venture at some point and we have reached this point. Our other programs will continue to assist the women of Kandahar Treasures with their many needed and necessary aspects including health initiatives, continued education and training.
