What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Millions of children in Africa do not get the surgery they need. Many therefore die unnecessarily at a very young age. Many more live painful, unfulfilling and unproductive lives, shut off from their peers, lacking an education and skills, and being considered a curse upon their families.

In many cases parents simply do not know that surgery can improve the quality of life for their child. Even with that knowledge, access to surgical care can be extremely difficult due to large distances. The funds to travel to a surgical center and to pay for the surgery is a major challenge.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Joytown Primary School

We provide rehabilitative care for the residential Joytown Primary School for Children with Disabilities in Thika, Kenya.

Population(s) Served
Children and youth

BethanyKids treats patients with burns, burn contractures, anorectal anomalies, hypospadias, cleft lip/cleft palate, hydrocephalus, spina bifida and other congenital and acquired anomalies.

Population(s) Served
Children and youth

BethanyKids operates 19 mobile medical clinics across Kenya.  Because of the inability of families to travel to Kijabe it is imperative that we travel to these areas to reach the many children who need care.  Through our network of clinics, we screen disabled children needing surgery and/or rehabilitation.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Provide healing for children who have acquired and congenital anomalies through surgical and rehabilitative care.

Train African doctors as pediatric surgeons through an accredited training program under the College of Surgeons of Eastern, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA).

Support the work of pediatric surgeons in Kenya, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Sierra Leone and Uganda by subsidizing the cost of much-needed pediatric surgery;

Send a team of nurses and therapists to Mobile Clinics across Kenya to screen for children who need surgery and follow-up with the children who have already had surgery;

Provide medical care and rehabilitation for children at Joytown Primary School for Children with Disabilities in Thika, Kenya

Train physicians in pediatric surgery and neurosurgery;

Educate people across Kenya in the prevention and care of children who have medical conditions requiring surgery.

We have two missionary surgeons, Dr. Britney Grayson and Dr. Jason Axt plus eight African pediatric surgeons trained by BethanyKids working in seven countries in Africa, i.e. Kenya, Madagascar, Uganda, Ethiopia and Sierra Leone, Zambia, and Cameroon.

We have five therapists working full-time at the Joytown School to provide physiotherapy, occupational therapy, hydrotherapy and wheelchair fitting.

We raise approximately $1 million each year to subsidize the cost of surgery for families who cannot afford it, to operate mobile clinics, to train pediatric surgeons and to operate the therapy program at Joytown School.

We have three people currently in training as pediatric neurosurgeons.

We have made and continue to make progress toward our goals. We provide pediatric surgeries in 7 different African countries thanks to our model, which emphasizes partnerships with local hospitals and the training of new pediatric surgeons. Since 2004 we performed 36,900 pediatric surgical procedures.

As part of our longterm commitment to children’s health, we have provided 27,469 rehab sessions since 2004. In addition to that, we have worked to provide quality wheelchairs and other assistive devices to children needing them.

Since 2004 we have provided outpatient clinics as well as mobile clinics to ensure quality follow-up care is provided. These clinics also give us the opportunity to meet new patients who would benefit from our programs.

Data
  • We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
  • We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
Policies and processes
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
