Avalon Theatre Project
The Avalon Theatre offers first run independent and art films but the theatre means much more to the vitality of the community than merely first- run films. On any Saturday morning, the theater fills with children who have come to see age appropriate films, live puppet shows or kids-focused rock bands as a part of our Weekend Family Matinee Program. This program operates weekly and is attended by approximately 5000 kids and families annually. The Avalon has also established successful monthly Embassy collaborations through the French Cinematheque and Lions of Czech Film programs. These programs are attended by approximately 2500 film buffs with a particular interest in French and Czech culture. The Avalon hosts many local film festivals and programs including the C'est Chic French Film Film Festival, DC Jewish Film Festival, FilmFest DC, the Environmental Film Festival, and the Key Sunday Cinema Club. In 2007, the Avalon launched a program in collaboration with the Oasis Institute, a national nonprofit organization designed to enhance the quality of life for seniors. Additionally, the theater became the primary venue for a French Embassy sponsored festival called ?C?est Chic.? Beyond 2007, the Avalon plans to offer film education programs targeted at adults as well as visual literacy programs designed for children.
