Mission

Presently there are few, if any, alternatives in Northern Virginia to keep out of school, at-risk and often adjudicated young people from a downward spiraling life with no real future.

Through project based learning, adult mentoring and the craft of wooden boat building, ASF offers a pathway for these young people to become productive, successful adults.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

The Apprentice Program

ASF focuses primarily on boat building activities. The program contains two elements, an apprenticeship program and a hands-on/practical educational component. Hands-on education teaches academics (math and science), personal responsibility (through teamwork), communication skills and the knowledge that young people can succeed at a task. Through this teaching of practical applications of math and science, the concepts and experience of teamwork and a taste of success we teach attitude change that leads to the making of better decisions under the pressures of everyday life.
