What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Rivers & Roads
GreenWorks' Rivers & Roads program engages more than 3,000 volunteers each year in over 200 projects focused on cleaning up litter along the rivers, roadways and neighborhoods throughout Buncombe County.
Urban Forestry
GreenWorks' efforts around enhancing the urban forest in Asheville and Buncombe County involves planting shade trees on city streets, installing community orchards in low-wealth neighborhoods and coordinating a citizen-led inventory of street trees.
Waste Reduction
With the primary goal of reducing the amount of waste going into the landfill, GreenWorks promotes the 3 R's of reduce, reuse and recycle. We offer large scale recycling events such as Hard 2 Recycle and Tire Amnesty Days seven times a year and hold public workshops on residential composting.
Environmental Education
Through hands-on educational activities, students in grades K-12 learn about waste reduction, recycling, composting, urban forestry, native pollinators and water quality.
Youth Environmental Leadership Program (YELP)
Teens living in low-income neighborhoods in Asheville participate in an 8-week paid internship with GreenWorks, learning about water quality and forestry through hands-on projects alongside professionals.
Bee City U.S.A. - Asheville
GreenWorks coordinates programming for Asheville --
the inaugural chapter of Bee City U.S.A. Carrying out the mission of the national organization locally, GreenWorks helps communities install pollinator habitat and teaches about the importance of native pollinators.
