Cultivate connections and strive to model best practices

Produce "Principles & Practices” guide for nonprofit best practices. Provide confidential member assistance for challenges faced by nonprofits. Maintain robust website with resources, templates, articles, and toolkits on issues like fundraising, financial management, human resources, legal compliance, risk management, board governance, advocacy, technology, and public policy. Network, train, and collaborate with nonprofit board, staff, volunteers, supporters, funders, and community members through webinars, workshops, community discussions, and site visits. Arrange pro bono consultations with attorneys, CPAs, HR and marketing experts, professional coaches, and executive transition consultants.

Population(s) Served
Adults

Track federal and state policy issues and keep nonprofits informed. Encourage nonprofits to speak out at the right moment with the right message to the right policymakers. Form coalitions to ensure that the sector remains unified on key policy issues. Connect practitioners to policymakers through town hall meetings, legislative lobby days, and other statewide advocacy events.

Population(s) Served
Adults

Connect our 1,200 nonprofit members serving all 100 NC counties. Convene the annual statewide Conference for North Carolina's Nonprofit Sector. Host and present webinars and workshops on topics such as financial management, legal compliance, equity, fundraising, and online engagement. Produce monthly newsletters to keep member nonprofits informed of current trends, tools, and information to increase organizational effectiveness and sustainability.

Population(s) Served
Adults

The nonprofit sector has a racial leadership gap, and few leaders are addressing the systemic barriers and practices to change it. The Walking the Talk initiative specifically addresses racial and generational leadership gaps, and the policies, practices, and organizational cultures in nonprofits that exacerbate them. As part of the on-going initiative, the Center presents equity-focused webinars and workshops, hosts focus groups and community discussions, curates an online library of resources, exercises, and toolkits, and convenes a cadre of NC equity consultants and practitioners.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Strengthen the Center’s statewide leadership in equity and anti-racism in the nonprofit sector with a primary focus to increase opportunities and decrease barriers at executive levels among people of color.

Create new solutions to support nonprofit organizations challenged by limited resources for strengthening their operations.

Expand the Center’s public policy and advocacy efforts to provide a stronger voice on legislative issues and operational issues that impact nonprofits.

Choose partnerships and collaborations with public agencies, private businesses, and nonprofits at state, regional and local levels which support our mission and core values in service to all North Carolina nonprofits.

Create a dynamic executive transition plan that builds on leadership from within the organization and plans for future leadership.

Build the Center as a premier statewide capacity building and learning community.

Support core operations, technology, and strong financial management for the Center.

Data
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
Policies and processes
  • We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
