Mission

TRYON PALACE FOUNDATION, INC. (THE "CHARITY") IS A SUPPORTING ORGANIZATION AND IS OPERATED EXCLUSIVELY FOR THE BENEFIT OF, TO PERFORM THE FUNCTIONS OF, AND TO CARRY OUT THE PURPOSE OF TRYON PALACE. TRYON PALACE IS OWNED AND OPERATED BY THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA AND INCLUDES THE HISTORIC SITES AND ITS ASSOCIATED ACTIVITIES. TRYON PALACE, THE RESTORED SITE OF ROYAL GOVERNOR WILLIAM TRYON, WAS ORIGINALLY BUILT IN 1770 AND DESTROYED BY FIRE IN 1798. THE PALACE AND GROUNDS WERE RESTORED BY THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA USING STATE FUNDS AS WELL AS FUNDS FROM A PRIVATE TRUST CREATED UNDER THE WILL OF MAUDE MOORE LATHAM. TRYON PALACE REOPENED IN 1959.TRYON PALACE IS OPEN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC DAILY. SPECIAL HISTORICAL, EDUCATIONAL, AND CULTURAL EVENTS ARE ALSO HELD AT TRYON PALACE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. THE FOUNDATION CONDUCTS FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES AND ACCEPTS GRANTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS.

AS A SUPPORTING ORGANIZATION, TRYON PALACE FOUNDATION USES FUNDS FROM GRANTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS TO HELP TRYON PALACE MAINTAIN ITS BUILDINGS, GROUNDS, MUSEUM, AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING. THE ORGANIZATION ALSO PROVIDES FUNDING FOR CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL EXHIBITS AT TRYON PALACE. RESTORATION OF THE NEW BERN ACADEMY CONTINUED DURING 2020 AS DID HURRICANE FLORENCE RECOVERY PROJECTS. IN 2020 THE FOUNDATION ALSO MADE IMPROVEMENTS TO ITS ANNEX BUILDING, WHICH IS PRIMARILY USED FOR COLLECTIONS AND COLLECTIONS STAFF. THESE IMPROVEMENTS INCLUDED HVAC REPLACEMENT, INSTALLATION OF A SECURITY AND FIRE DETECTION SYSTEM, AND OTHER HEALTH AND SAFETY REPAIRS. DURING 2020, PLANNING CONTINUED FOR THE UPCOMING GARDEN COTTAGE PROJECT, WHICH IS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN IN 2021.IN MARCH 2020, TRYON PALACE AND THE NC HISTORY CENTER WERE SUBJECT TO GOVERNMENT-MANDATED CLOSURE IN RESPONSE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. ONCE THE FACILITIES COULD RE-OPEN TO LIMITED VISITORS LATER IN THE YEAR, THE FOUNDATION INITIATED A WIDE-RANGING PROMOTIONS PLAN TO RE-ACQUAINT THE GENERAL PUBLIC WITH TRYON PALACE AND THE NC HISTORY CENTER AND INFORM THEM THAT THE FACILITIES WERE OPEN AND THAT HEALTH AND SAFETY PROTOCOLS HAD BEEN PUT IN PLACE.

PROMOTION OF SPECIAL HISTORIC, EDUCATIONAL, AND CULTURAL EVENTS AT TRYON PALACE.IN 2020, THE FOUNDATION SPONSORED A U.S. COLORED TROOPS (USCT) SYMPOSIUM AND LIVING HISTORY DAY. THE PURPOSE WAS TO RAISE AWARENESS OF NEW BERN'S UNIQUE HERITAGE OF THE 35TH USCT DURING THE CIVIL WAR, TO EXPAND THE HISTORICAL BASE OF INFORMATION ABOUT THE 35TH USCT TO BE USED BY THE TRYON PALACE INTERPRETIVE UNIT AND INCORPORATED INTO THE STORIES SHARED WITH AUDIENCES, AND PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE COMMUNITY TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE ROLE OF THE 35TH USCT, INCLUDING ITS ACTIVE ROLE IN THE EFFORT OF AFRICAN AMERICANS TO OBTAIN THEIR FREEDOM.

PROMOTION OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS FOR ADULTS AND CHILDREN, THEREBY PROVIDING ADDITIONAL EXPOSURE TO THE HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL MISSION OF TRYON PALACE. THE FOUNDATION'S PALACE SCHOLARS PROGRAM PROVIDES FIELD TRIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS ATTENDING TITLE I SCHOOLS IN NORTH CAROLINA. PARTICIPATION IN THIS PROGRAM DURING 2020 WAS SIGNIFICANTLY LIMITED DUE TO COVID-19 PANDEMIC RELATED CLOSURES OF TRYON PALACE AS WELL AS PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
