What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
In recent years the average number of teen births in California has been reported to be over 50,000 annually. Teen moms have a 70% school drop-out rate. One of the primary objectives of our program is to strengthen our current mentoring program to continue through highschool graduation and on to a higher education for the teen moms enrolled in our program. We place an emphasis on education. We provide text books, IT hardware, school clothes, baby clothes, diapers and other resources to enable our constituents to focus on attending classes. During our first year in operation we have begun a partnership with 15 to 20 young teen moms in the Sacramento area. During the current school year we will be accepting another 20 young girls into our program. Many teen moms are victims of child abuse and neglect, our program addresses the special needs of this youth population. A secondary yet extremely important objective of the Amigas SWIM organization is that of prevention. Our services will not neglect to address the need for birth control and will encourage abstinence until adulthood. Amigas SWIM currently operates a thrift shop in the heart of downtown Sacramento, where the highest population of homeless exist. The Amigas SWIM thrift shop is serving additional needs outside our mission statement. We are able to offer high quality, second hand, moderately priced items to persons who are victims of a stifling economy, drug addictions, and life's hardships.
