Edisto Island Open Land Trust, Inc.

aka EIOLT   |   Edisto Island, SC   |  www.edisto.org

Mission

Our mission is to preserve and protect lands, scenic vistas, heritage, and conservation resources of Edisto Island for future generations. Founded in 1994, EIOLT works with landowners, the community and its conservation partners to protect critical lands in perpetuity. This is accomplished through the donation or purchase of conservation easements. EIOLT's conserved properties, which represent the rich patchwork of the South Carolina Lowcountry, are treasured for their natural, recreational, cultural, archaeological, historic and scenic qualities. Through the work of EIOLT and its conservation partners, Edisto now has the highest percentage of undeveloped land of any barrier island on the South Carolina coast.

Programs

Conservation Planning and Land Protection: EIOLT promotes sustainable land use by helping owners to create a plan that meets their financial, family, philanthropic and conservation interests. Together with real estate professionals, lawyers and other practitioners, EIOLT helps owners place protections on their land while also allowing them certain sustainable uses. Stewardship: EIOLT ensures its lands are protected in perpetuity by (1) annual monitoring of conserved properties and (2) seeking contributions to its stewardship fund. Education: EIOLT provides education on land preservation and the benefits of conservation easements via its events, communications tools(website, newsletters, direct mail, media relations), and professional networks. At the local level, teaching and consensus-building are achieved through educational events, public meetings, sponsoring practitioner and landowner seminars, and networking with community organizations. Also key are special community-wide projects such as the creation of the Corridor Management Plan for Edisto Highway (SC 174) and the acceptance of SC 174 for National Scenic Byway designation.
