What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Support groups and social events
We offer a monthly support group for families of children with cancer where patients, siblings and their parents spend an evening sharing their experiences with each other in a comfortable, non-medical environment. We also provide large social events every quarter (Spring Party, Summer Picnic, Halloween Party and Holiday Party) to accommodate the support needs of families who live too far from Madison to attend our week-night Family Gatherings. We host quarterly support groups for families of children with Sickle Cell Disease.
Financial Assistance
We provide limited financial assistance to protect the health and safety of the child with cancer or a life-threatening blood disorder by covering utilities, transportation expenses, rent or mortgage, groceries, medicine co-pays, emergency car repairs and other essentials. We work closely with hospital social workers to insure the most valuable use of our resources.
New Diagnosis Bags
We provide a large duffle bag with age appropriate toys, books, distractions, and comfort items for newly diagnosed hospitalized children. The bags also contain childhood cancer informational materials, for kids and parents, plus a toiletry kit for parents and a $50 gas card.
Gas Cards
We provide pre-paid gas cards to individual families whose financial situation makes it difficult to afford transportation expenses for the frequent trips required to our regional pediatric cancer center. Assistance is distributed directly from our office and through the children's hospital social workers.
Hero Beads
Hero Beads let kids and teens with cancer or blood
disorders commemorate their personal treatment journey in the form of a simple,
visible medical record. They receive a cord with letter beads
that spell out their first name, plus a Diagnosis bead and a bead representing
the American Family Children’s Hospital. Every time a child or teen has a procedure or passes a
particular milestone, a member of the medical team can give him or her a special bead
to add to your cord of beads. Over time, Hero Beads provide a symbol of each
patient’s personal journey, a touchable testament to strength and endurance.
