Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Winner's Woods

Our goal is to give at-risk 0-6year old
children and their families the "tools" they need for that child to
flourish from the start.  Parents are provided opportunity to
participate in parenting classes through our sister agency the "Family
Resource Center".  As early as age zero the children and their
parents enter a program at the Winner's Club where parent child
nurturing and interaction is encouraged.  The parents learn to
interact in a calm, caring and loving way while learning to stimulate
the intellectual development of their child.  The children and
their parents have fun while interacting as the child learns and
develops.  In Winner's Woods children are introduced to computers
as early as age 1 ½, they learn to control and use computers while they
participate in computer based learning games.  The goal of
Winner's Woods is to identify at-risk families and intercede early so
that upon entering school the children are at grade level and well
adjusted.  A successful outcome in Winner's Woods might mean that
the child might not need the programs we offer to older children. The
programs and philosophies of the Winner's Club have changed in response
to renowned studies such as High/Scope Perry and Abecedarian, which
have proven that children who receive appropriate child care and are
ready to enter kindergarten at the appropriate age level are; less
likely to need remedial courses; less likely to repeat a grade level;
and more likely to graduate from High School; more likely to own their
own home.  We also know that children who are on the appropriate
grade level by age 8 have an 80% chance of graduating from High School,
while those who are not face a 90% likelihood of not graduating from
High School.

Winner's Club provides children with love,
mentoring and self-esteem building.  The program is designed to
help children develop into the best people they can be.  The motto
of the Winner's Club is "everyone can be a winner at
something.   Children referred to us have been identified as
at-risk and often are experiencing difficulty at school.  Many of
the children referred to us have gotten into trouble at school and in
the community.  At the Winner's Club these children interact with
many adult role models who become mentors to these children.  This
role modeling and mentoring at the Winner's Club is intensive,
relationships formed at the Winner's Club can last decades as the child
can enter the program and remain until their 21 st birthday.  Most of
these children have very low self-esteem and many have already given up
on life, they believe they are doomed to fail in life.  Many of
these children are form broken homes, blended families and single
parent families, families with problems such as molestation, child
abuse, neglect and addiction.  Most of our families are
economically disadvantaged and survive on SSI, Food Stamps, Peach Care,
Medicaid, Public Housing, Fee Lunch and other programs.  Many of
our children are no longer in the care of their birth parents.
Some of our children are in foster homes, group-homes; some are in the
custody of DEFACS, YDC or RYDC.  The children and families we
serve are definitely some of the most at-risk and disadvantaged in
Gordon County. Most of the children we serve have been deprived of a
loving environment in which they can feel secure and loved.  Some
of these children have been abused and are suspicious and untrusting of
all adults.  In the Winner's club the children interact for years
with caring adult role models.  Trust in adults is re-established,
self-esteem is built, and children learn that they are loved.
With confidence and self-esteem rebuilt many of these children begin
performing at a higher level at school and develop a better self-image.
