What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Since the American Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Institute has been in existence, we have participated in many campaigns to lower the incidence of death. We have seen the yearly numbers of sudden infant deaths decrease from over 11,000 to less than 4,000 per year in the US. But we believe within the next decade we can end these deaths all together. We are on the track to understanding the medical and genetic predispositions. Progressing with the research is crucial. However, along with the fall in the numbers of deaths, there has been a drastic reduction in donations to fight SIDS. The American SIDS Institute needs help raising funds for research. It is more important now than ever before. The end of SIDS is in sight.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

We want to end SIDS!

In a typical situation, parents awake to find their infant that thought was sleeping is actually dead. There is no greater tragedy a parent can experience. Research is hinting at the likelihood that infants who die this way are probably born with a brain defect. This defect probably alters the way they arouse in even mildly asphyxiating situations.

Scientists need tissue from infants who die to help understand what produces this defect. And we need to study the breathing and arousal of live infants to understand what can lead to problems.

Money is needed to fund the research.
