What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Orange County Rose Society, affiliate of the American Rose Society
The Orange County Rose Society supports the goals and programs of the American Rose Society. The American Rose Society is dedicated to extending the knowledge, production, use and appreciation of roses in all forms. The following are programs/publications of the ARS: 1) Judging Program - The judging program is a specialized program for those who want to learn how to judge roses and rose arrangements in competition. Contact the ARS to find out about the requirements for becoming a judge and where to find a judging school near you. 2) Consulting Rosarian Program - The ARS has a program for the further education of members who wish to become Consulting Rosarians. Consulting Rosarian Schools are held at various places around the country for those who wish to learn more about roses or who want to become a Consulting Rosarian. The Consulting Rosarian Manual is available and is full of helpful advice, proven growing methods and the latest recommendations for combating rose diseases and insect pests. It can be ordered from the ARS. 3) "American Rose" magazine. ARS members receive a free subscription to The American Rose, which is published 11 times annually. They also receive The Rose Annual each December. The publication summarizes many of the activities of the Society, as well as offering stimulating articles on research, the new roses in the world and the results of various rose trials held here in this country and abroad. Also included with an ARS membership is the Handbook for Selecting Roses. This publication offers a condensed listing of roses commercially available in the United States and Canada. It also gives the color class and ARS rating for each rose - the higher the number, the better that particular rose has performed across the nation. 4) "The Rose Exhibitor's Forum" - This is a quarterly journal for rose exhibitors and all rose lovers, devoted to all aspects of rose exhibiting and rose horticulture. 5) "The Rose Arranger's Bulletin." - This is a quarterly journal for rose arrangers featuring tips on arranging, design, materials, techniques, design forms and arrangement show results from across the Nation. 6) Other publications. These include "Mini News," a quarterly newsletter featuring information specially for the miniature rose enthusiast; "OGR & Shrubs Gazette," a quarterly newsletter featuring information specially collected for the OGR and Shrub enthusiast; and "The Handbook for Selecting Roses," a buyer's guide including more than 2,500 varieties of roses that are commercially available to the buying public, with a detailed alphabetical listing.
