What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

3Keys is working to address the deficit of affordable permanent supportive housing in metro-Atlanta, GA to address the ever-growing issue of homelessness in our community. According to the 2018 Annual Homeless Assessment Report (AHAR) to Congress released in December 2018, there were a total of 9,499 homeless in the state of Georgia, 73% were considered homeless individuals and 10% were chronically homeless individuals. In addition, reported by the Atlanta Point-in-Time Count, since 2018 the number of individuals homeless in Atlanta increased by 12% while over 1,000 of those individuals were diagnosed with a mental illness. According to the CDC, adults who are unable to afford rent are more likely to be in poor health, have mental distress, and delay doctor visits. Treatment and preventive care can be difficult to access for homeless individuals.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The individuals served in our programs are diverse subgroups of adults known as the hardest to reach and retain, whom other service providers tend to screen out. We provide permanent supportive housing to individual adults over the age of 18, (male or female) from diverse races and ethnicities, as well as veterans. Additionally, while every individual we serve is mentally ill, many of our residents face a dual diagnosis which often includes substance abuse and addiction issues, developmental disabilities and/or HIV/AIDS. Prior to residing at 3Keys, residents are known to have come from hospitals, behavioral health institutions, emergency shelters, correctional facilities, the streets or other locations not equipped for habitation who generally have no income.

3Keys is aiming to provide homeless individuals with mental illness with affordable permanent housing in metro-Atlanta. Through our mission, we will address the homelessness issue and provide individuals in need an affordable and permanent place to live along with support services to treat their disabilities and prevent them from returning back to homelessness.

3Keys currently operates seven permanent housing programs to house 477 individuals through five residential communities and two residential scattered-site programs located in Fulton and DeKalb County in the Metro Atlanta, GA area. Our permanent housing programs are dedicated to addressing the needs of permanent long-term housing. To promote their independence and provide them with the opportunity to live their lives at a higher standard residents are provided with their own one-bedroom studio units, some equipped with a full kitchen or access to a facility kitchen or cafeteria, sitting space, computer lab, and a clubhouse for socializing and other activities. There is no time limit on residents living in our housing programs, however, lease regulations must be followed as if living on any residential property. Each property has an onsite property manager, maintenance technician, front desk staff, and support services. Property management and services work together to provide the best housing and services for residents to help them maintain their housing long-term. Each of our programs are specifically designed to meet the specific needs of the residents with compassion and dignity.

To support our residents with what has been deemed as their adversities, along with permanent housing, we provide residents with access to a wide array of support services needed for successful independent living. For easy accessibility for our residents, our services are located on-site at each property that includes, but is not limited to, case management, employment assistance, basic needs and food assistance, health screenings, medication monitoring and assistance with daily living skills.

There are several nonprofit organizations in the metro Atlanta area that address the needs of homelessness and mental illness. 3Keys differs from these organizations because we accept individuals on a housing-first approach with no strict requirements such as income, sobriety, gender type, or family make up to be accepted in the program. We meet residents where they are. Additionally, by staffing skilled and passionate professionals, we possess the ability to accept individuals on a housing first bases and provide them with the needed resources and support services. Furthermore, our housing is permanent where there are no time limits on how long residents can live in our housing program.

Since the year of 1988, 3Keys has been committed to addressing the needs of homelessness and mental illness in the metro Atlanta area for individuals facing these challenges. With seven permanent housing programs across DeKalb and Fulton County, two of Georgia’s most populous counties in regards to homelessness, 3Keys currently has the capacity to provide housing to 477 individuals at any time. This has made us one of the largest nonprofit providers of permanent supportive housing in the Southeastern United States and an integral part of the Atlanta Continuum of Care (CoC), the Department of Community Affairs, and HUD as these organizations highly rely on us to meet the needs of this population. With over 30 years of experience providing adequate permanent supportive housing for formerly homeless individuals with mental illness, we are confident we possess the qualifications and proficiency to continue to respond to the ever-growing need for this population in the City of Atlanta now, and many years to come.

3Keys is committed to providing essential basic needs such as housing and supportive programs and services that contribute to increased self-sufficiency. Since our founding with a single housing program of 48 units, 3Keys has since expanded to a nationally-recognized nonprofit provider of permanent supportive housing serving 477 individuals at any given time through operating seven permanent housing programs located in Fulton and DeKalb County in the Metro Atlanta, GA area.

We are happy to report that in 2018, 500 residents were served and provided with permanent supportive housing to transform their lives for a brighter and healthier future while maintaining a housing stability rate of over 90% combined for all of our properties, reducing re-occurring episodes of chronic homelessness. Additionally, hospitalization recidivism was decreased by 60% using the Housing First Model and increased income for 82% of our residents (HUD Benchmark is 80%).
