Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Mentoring
MENTORING is the cornerstone of 100 Black Men of America, Inc. (The 100) and its network of over 100 Chapters. The social, cultural, emotional, and unique needs of youth, primarily African American males, are addressed through one-to-one and group mentoring relationships by 100 Black Men chapter members. Committed to our cause, our members serve as positive role models, advocates, and trusted advisors to children and young adults, including the Collegiate 100® and the Emerging 100®, in their local communities. The 100’s signature mentoring program is an effective, evidenced-based and strategic intervention that helps youth reach their full potential and become contributing members of society. The miracles of mentoring impact over 125,000 lives annually and change communities.
Education
EDUCATION is the key to opportunity and is embedded in the mission of our organization. The 100 has been mentoring African American youth for more than 50 years and knows the importance of education to one’s life trajectory and the ability to achieve dreams. Although segregation in the U.S. ended over 50 years ago, significant inequities in public education still exist today. We consider the transformation of education as one of the critical civil rights issues of our time; and staunchly believe that all youth, regardless of race and socio-economic status, must have access to quality education to become ready to compete in a global society. Knowledge is power if you have access to it and can properly apply it.
Health and Wellness
HEALTH & WELLNESS is a vital component of a successful individual and a thriving community. The 100 focuses on the well-being of the whole person: physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual through initiatives that: 1) raise awareness of health disparities and solutions; and 2) provide access to health care and wellness information that promote behavioral changes that result in healthier lifestyles, good nutrition, regular physical activity, and full ownership of one’s health. At the national and local level, our organization and Chapter affiliates partner with corporations, foundations and other nonprofit organizations to promote preventative health strategies and provide education on prevalent diseases that negatively impact African Americans. Through these partnerships, The 100 delivers health education programs in hundreds of communities annually. Healthy children can become healthy adults; and healthy adults contribute to the overall health of our communities.
Economic Empowerment
ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT is necessary to create a just society, for without empowerment there is no self-sufficiency. 100 Black Men of America, Inc. promotes and fosters the ability of its mentees and members to be self-determined in creating dreams, pursuing them and ultimately perpetuating those dreams and aspirations by establishing the mechanisms to sustain generational wealth. Through comprehensive curricula and training opportunities, our organization works diligently to promote economic self-sufficiency and break the cycle of generational debt. It is the goal of The 100 to leave a legacy of wealth-building which leads to debt-free living for the youth and communities we serve.
Our economic empowerment programs and initiatives foster financial literacy, career development, financial planning, investment management, and fiscal responsibility at an early age. Exposing our youth and collegiate students to the skills, strategies and mindset of entrepreneurship also provide beneficial, transferrable knowledge that will help to establish a firm foundation from which they can later build upon for business development and wealth creation. The words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. resonate as profoundly today as they did in 1967 when he declared, “The dignity of the individual will flourish when the decisions concerning his life are in his own hands; when he has the means to seek self-improvement.”
Leadership Development
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT and the cultivation of our next generation of leaders is a worthwhile investment. 100 Black Men of America continues to prepare youth and young adults who can lead the way and become the next generation of global leaders. The future of our organization and our country lies in the ability to develop a pipeline of talented, courageous and effective leaders who can take up the mantle and take on the challenges that lie ahead.
Many of the members in our network of 100 Black Men Chapters are leaders of other organizations on local, regional and national levels. These men serve as trailblazers and role models for the youth of today who will assume their positions tomorrow. By example and through leadership training, our members work tirelessly to help empower mentees to build character and create hope, aspirations, plans, and futures. Our motto, “What They See Is What They’ll Be®” is epitomized in the servant leadership of our members.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
As the largest network of African American male mentors in the nation, 100 Black Men of America, Inc. seeks to improve the quality of life for the youth, families and communities we serve. Our organizational imperative is to address the needs and positively change the life-trajectory of marginalized youth by delivering the most impactful programming and resources possible in the areas of Mentoring, Education, Health & Wellness, Economic Empowerment and Leadership Development.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our motto, “What They See Is What They'll Be," very succinctly expresses how our programmatic services rendered to disadvantaged, disenfranchised and low-income youth and families positively changes their life trajectory. By giving our youth viable examples of individuals who have successfully walked the same path, shared the same challenges and have a cultural connection, we are not only preparing them for their own success, but also demonstrating replicable behavior that breaks destructive cycles and yields dividends for generations to come. The guidance provided, programmatic services delivered, opportunities expanded, access granted, influence leveraged and advocacy achieved through our members' commitment have positively changed young lives and families.
Through our platform of Mentoring The 100 Way ®Across A Lifetime, we provide programmatic services in education, health and wellness, economic empowerment and leadership development, which makes a fundamental difference in the lives of the youth we touch and the communities we serve.
"The 100 As One: One Mission, One Cause, One Network" mantra serves as the strategic ideology that drives systematic and sustainable change while simultaneously making a significant impact.
A. One Mission drives our unified vision and solidifies our organizational core by aligning our chapter network, increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of our operational functions, fortifying our governance at all levels and continuing the implementation of our Strategic Plan.
B. One Cause drives systemic change and intensifies our organizational impact. We are able to deepen our ability to make a verifiable difference through the expansion of our Mentoring the 100 Way® Across A Lifetime platform, standardizing our process for implementing and evaluating a common set of program metrics across our chapter network, expanding our mentoring programs and critical wrap-around services to reach a broader mass within the communities we serve, and diversifying our strategic partnership base that champions our cause for long-term sustainability.
C. One Network drives our unified voice and leverages our organizational influence. This requires expanding our reach through diversified and innovative alliances. We are to extend our presence and increase involvement within the communities we serve through creating collaborative coalitions and alliances with other synergistic organizations and institutions, fostering deeper relationships with relevant agencies at the local, state, and national levels, and strategically assuming relevant leadership positions at the local, state, and national levels.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The overall concept of The 100 began in 1963 in New York City when a group of concerned African American men began to meet to explore ways of improving conditions in their community. These visionaries included businessmen and industry leaders such as David Dinkins, Robert Mangum, Dr. William Hayling, Nathaniel Goldston III, Livingston Wingate Andrew Hatcher, and Jackie Robinson. Since inception, the vision has materialized to be shared by more than 10,000 members reaching over 125,000 underserved, underrepresented minority youth annually.
Our vast chapter network has nearly 100 chapters in the United States, England and the Caribbean.
These chapters are comprised of men who volunteer their time, talent and service to provide the "boots on the ground" that implement services in these cities across the country and abroad. They are serious about their commitment to create environments where our youth and their families are inspired to dream, challenged to achieve and empowered to become stakeholders in their communities. The guidance provided, programmatic services delivered, opportunities expanded, access granted, influence leveraged and advocacy achieved through our members' commitment have positively changed young lives and families.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
The demand for services in all programmatic areas continues to rise. We have determined that our continued
focus on education reform and access to high-performing schools is vital to the
success of the youth, families and communities we serve. Additionally, we identified
the need to expand our efforts in social justice reform, addressing the associated
disparities, inequities and effects on our youth and communities.
