OperaWorks, Inc

aka OperaWorks   |   Granada Hills, CA   |  www.operaworks.org

Mission

OperaWorks' mission is to train and empower performers to excel personally and artistically, and to develop new audiences for opera through innovative alternatives to traditional opera productions.

Notes from the nonprofit

OperaWorks went on hiatus in 2017 and 2019-2022 during the pandemic. Programmatic activities will begin again in summer 2023 with a new artistic and administrative team, and an expanded board. The board is committed to diversifying its membership through the expansion. While our educational programs have always included attendees of diverse ethnicities and disabilities, the new administration and board are focused on continued outreach to a broader range of populations.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Intensive Training Programs for Performers and Teaching Artists

OperaWorks' national training programs include Two- and Four-Week Intensive Program for Singers; Voice Teacher Development Programs; National Workshops & Master Classes.

OperaWorks’ curriculum and programs have expanded over the past 30 years as the demands of a singing career have changed. OperaWorks was the first program to offer classes in yoga, Feldenkreis, Aikido, visualization, expressive conducting for singers, marketing, career planning, and social media. The curriculum also includes acting, repertoire coaching, musical improvisation, acting improvisation, and audition techniques. Professional headshot and recording sessions have long been a part of the programs to help prepare singers present themselves professionally.

Our exceptional faculty are professional performers and pedagogues who are well-versed in opera traditions, but who are willing to explore the unique capabilities and artistry of each singer.

Policies and processes
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
