What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Program 1

Code Club - Phase 1

TechStart Tampa Bay partners with the YMCA at Sulphur Springs Elementary School, and soon Melrose Elementary School, to provide a computer science education specialty program within their after-school care. Using Code.org, we teach the students there is something that has to happen behind the screen for the things on the screen to happen. As the curriculum continues, the students begin to learn basic coding terms, processes and ideals. To complement the code, we teach behavioral analysis and creativity tools to get them out of the standardized mindset (which helps with de-bugging) and how to control their emotions/reactions. Our final icing on the cake is that we provide snacks and water to all students, every class. We’ve found that most of the behavioral problems comes from 2 things - 1. The students ideas and concerns are not heard or reinforced. 2. Their hangry (hungry and thus angry).
