Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Friday Night Meetings

Our primary programming happens on Friday nights. LYG brings together LGBTQIA+ youth in a safe, fun and relaxing setting. This time provides youth with the opportunity to build healthy relationships, connect with the broader LGBTQIA+ community, and interact with adult mentors. Themes and topics include: game night, suicide prevention, mental health first-aid, emotional/social intelligence, #adulting, dance parties, and health education (just to name a few!)

Population(s) Served
LGBTQ people
Adolescents

The Youth Leadership Council (YLC) provides the youth governance over many programming aspects. Members of the YLC are responsible for planning programs which may include securing guest speakers and/or preparing workshops themselves. The YLC serves as the Advisory Committee to the Board of Directors for youth input into decision making.

Population(s) Served
Adolescents
Preteens

The annual Leadership Camp provides youth an opportunity to gain vital leadership skills and development in a residential setting. To reduce socio-economic barriers to participating, all campers attend on full scholarship (we do not ask for youth nor their families to pay for camp). While at camp, youth develop a strong peer-support network, complete a team building challenge course and experience the life outdoors including cooking on an open fire.

Population(s) Served
LGBTQ people

The 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month are dedicated to Trans supportive and educational programming. Local Trans leaders, and Trans mentors help guide our Trans identified youth through the complexities of their own self-discovery and the practical steps toward realizing their gender identity.

Population(s) Served
LGBTQ people

The LYG Junior group is for LGBTQIA+ and allied youth between the ages of 5-12. This group focuses on creating a welcoming space for both youth and parents to meet people and make friends. Similar to our young adult group, our Junior Group hosts development topics and opportunities to meet the needs of our youth and parents.

Population(s) Served

Many of our Trans youth are not allowed to dress in clothing that represents their gender identity. LYG offers a space for those youth to access clothing that matches their identity so that they can express externally what they know internally.

Population(s) Served

Many LGBTQIA+ youth feel unsafe taking their date to Prom. LYG’s Prom is a fun and safe experience for ALL youth, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Population(s) Served

LYG actively participates in the many Pride opportunities in the Kentuckiana region. Pride Month is an important way for LGBTQIA+ youth to connect their LGBTQIA+ roots while engaging with local LGBTQIA+ communities beyond LYG.

Population(s) Served

LYG’s Pasta Dinner and Talent Show is Kentuckiana’s favorite LYG fundraising event. Each year the youth design, plan and execute every detail of this fun and food-filled evening.

Data
  • We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
  • We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
  • We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
  • We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
  • We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
  • We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
Policies and processes
  • We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
  • We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
