What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Urban Conservation Corps
The Urban Conservation Corps (UCC) is an Environmental Education and Career Readiness program under YouthBuild Louisville (YBL). UCC trains Opportunity Youth ages 18-24, especially young people of color, in green-sector workforce skills through 170,000 collective hours of meaningful community service projects related to environmentalism and conservation in the urban setting. As full-time AmeriCorps members, participants earn a $15,000 living allowance and a $6,195 college scholarship upon completion of the program year.
UCC Members can pursue employment with local utility companies (MSD, LG&E and Louisville Water Company), nurseries, and natural setting municipal jobs in Louisville, Kentucky. Members receive job coaching and network connections through our UCC Instructor, SummerWorks staff, and community partnerships that are nurtured through UCC service efforts. This year, MSD approved YouthBuild as a partner of the Community Benefits Program. This strategic partnership combines MSD’s instructional and job training capabilities with youth aspiring to work in this sector.
At the end of the first program year, UCC members are expected to be placed in employment that improves their economic conditions and contributes to larger conservation efforts, including watershed protection, increasing the tree canopy, agricultural training, and remediating urban contaminants.
SummerWorks
SummerWorks is a seasonal job placement program for unemployed youth ages 16-21. Since its founding in 2011, SummerWorks has placed over 23,000 young people into summer jobs to earn an income, develop career skills, and start building a professional network. Youth employed through SummerWorks receive one-on-one job coaching from SummerWorks staff on YouthBuild Louisville's campus, connecting them with YouthBuild staff and increasing the probability that they will also take advantage of YouthBuild's other services.
Housing Youth First
The YouthBuild Louisville Housing Youth First program is one of many HUD-funded Youth Homelessness Demonstration Programs (YHDP) across the country. Through the Housing Youth First program, YouthBuild Louisville partners with local landlords (as well as developing our own properties) in order to house young people that enter our programs experiencing homelessness. In 2020 alone, YBL successfully housed 58 people (36 young people and 22 of their children) with the goal of housing 24 more by the end of 2021/22. Thanks to the generosity of the community, 22 units have also been successfully furnished in the course of the program this year.
