Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

AR Bookstore

Two to three times each year, the PTO funds "prizes" that students can purchase in an AR Bookstore.  Instead of using money to make purchases, the students must use points they have earned from taking short, computerized tests in the Accelerated Reading program.  This program encourages students to read more in order to earn more points and buy more prizes!  Ultimately, it supports the students' reading skills.

Population(s) Served

The Top Dog program recognizes approximately 200 students throughout the year for exemplary behavior.  Several times during the school year, two students are selected by each teacher for recognition.  The PTO recognizes those students during a school-wide evening function with an engraved medal and other, small honorary items.

Population(s) Served

The West PTO sponsors an annual "Teacher Appreciation Week" to recognize and encourage our teachers.  The week involves several activities at no direct cost, such as encouraging students to write notes explaining why they love their teachers.  However, our largest expense is providing a lunch outing for all the teachers.  Parents volunteer to spend two hours in the classroom while the teachers go to a local restaurant for lunch together.

Population(s) Served

The CATCH progam stands for Coordinated Approach To Child Health and is a nationwide program which has been adopted by Wilson County schools.  West Elementary has embraced this idea and hopes to make improvements each year that will support a healthy lifestyle and will encourage fitness and better food choices among the students and their families.  Our PTO has sponsored "Family Fun Nights", an opportunity for families to come to the school and get active together while receiving additional nutritional information and even door prizes that encourage continued physical activity.
