What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Nashville Organizers' Institute: Training for Grassroots Organizing

A nine week intensive training in the fundamental skills of grassroots organizing. The Institute is offered three times each annual cycle. A team of 10 – 15 Local organizers/facilitators offer training in specific organizing skills such as understanding power, racial justice, media outreach, citizen lobbying, and community resource mapping all in the context of existing local issue-based campaigns. Each training will be offered to 30 participants,

Population(s) Served

We hold a monthly roundtable discussion for all progressive individuals and organizations, regardless of whether they belong to NPJC.  Each month we choose the most burning issue of the day and discuss what to do about it. We try to involve both those leaders and groups dedicated to a particular issue and the broader progressive community, to help each issue find a wider constituency and to help us all become more knowledgeable about the issues and their interrelations.

Population(s) Served

The primary purpose is to combat militarism; to stop wars and occupations and to rechannel our resources towards peaceful purposes through education and the mobilization of public dissent. NPJC “educates into action” the general public by mobilizing public activities with a goal to put the voices of war veterans, families of soldiers, and young people at the forefront. The secondary purpose is to expand the movement by supporting local collective organizing (see accomplishments). The Nashville Peace Coalition has been the primary hub of local peace activism.

Population(s) Served

With U.S. media outlets overwhelmingly owned by for-profit conglomerates (8 conglomerates own 85% of all media) the NPJC offers alternatives to this system through 2 primary mechanisms: (i) www.nashvillepeacejustice.org, interactive website, and (ii) a weekly electronic "Eblast" community events calendar that reaches 2500 NPJC members.

Population(s) Served

The majority of NPJC member organizations have little or no budget, staff, or office. NPJC is a free community space. Members hold over 75 meetings a year in our conference room, and the NPJC office technology is available for member usage. NPJC provides informal technical assistance, publicity and help with coordination of events.
