What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Performing ARTs Academy
Our acting academy operates in the summer for six weeks from 8-5, five days a week. Students ages 9-13 rotate through classes including drama, creative writing/public speaking, dance and movement, choral music/voice and visual art. Our teachers are carefully screened to make sure that they first have a deep desire to work with children and a solid grasp of their instructional areas. Tuition: $350. Discount for multiple children. Sliding fee scale and scholarships for families who cannot afford tuition. Sponsors are sought to cover costs.
Following graduation from the Performing ARTs Academy, students have the option to move on to our Teen Acting Ensemble.
Acting Ensemble
Our adult acting company performs in our plays. Auditions are held annually, usually in the summer, and callback auditions occur closer to actual shows. Our ideal is to have a season of plays on regular annual schedule. Our annual holiday show is a new Teen Ensemble for youth ages 14-18. They will do plays and serve as a support group for all of our productions, gaining valuable esteem-building experiences by working with professional artists.
Choral, Jazz and Dance Ensembles
Choral is a small core group of 8-10. They form the base choir for our major productions, and they have performed around the city at benefits including the Hurricane Katrina Benefit, Community Nashville, and the Mayor's Neighborhood Conference. Our Jazz Ensemble has appeared at the Frist Center, TPAC, the Belcourt and in all musical productions of ART. Our Jazz Ensemble will perform a luncheon series where people can buy a box lunch and experience our playhouse. Our Dance Ensemble has performed at TPAC for Community Nashville and local schools and are in ART's large productions.
New Playwrights Series
Our New Playwrights Series discovers new writers who speak to themes of African American life. Writers submit plays during the year. Selected works are read to an audience by a cast of professional actors and solid feedback is delivered directly to the playwright during a post-show discussion. This allows new writers to see how their work is received before attempting to move to a full production.
