Programs and results
What we aim to solve
To develop an affordable vaccine for the Dengue virus.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Global's primary work is turning early-stage vaccine technologies into viable vaccines for the developing world. We work collaboratively with scientists from university and government laboratories in order to ensure top-quality research.
Dengue Fever Vaccine
We are developing technologies to improve the performance of vaccines in general, and are applying these to experimental vaccines for dengue fever, a virus that infects as many as 300 million people annually. GVI has established collaborations with dengue vaccine research groups California and New Delhi to help move vaccine prototypes into clinical trials.
New Vaccine for Poliovirus
Polio is an unusual virus in that it causes disease by invading the CNS but is transmitted from person to person after viral growth in the gut and excretion of infectious virus. The existing Sabin vaccine protects the gut, preventing both invasion of the CNS and excretion/transmission of the virus. However, Sabin is a mutant virus vaccine that can regain virulence and initiate epidemics. The Salk vaccine immunizes the body but not the gut, preventing CNS invasion but doing little to stop virus growth in the gut and transmission to others. Collaborating with a government laboratory in Holland, we are developing a new polio vaccine that cannot regain virulence but which nevertheless can protect both the CNS and gut, thus preventing disease and transmission. We believe that this type of new vaccine will be necessary for eventual eradication of the virus.
Vaccine Technologies
New technologies will drive the development of inexpensive vaccines for poor countries. We are engaged in developing three such technologies. As they mature, we will apply these to specific vaccine development projects.
