Mission

The Amazon Institute was founded on the belief that our youth can change the world. Given the opportunity to work on projects that address important issues, they are in a better position to lead social change.  We achieve this mission by providing at risk students educational opportunities to learn, build life skills and contribute to the community.

Youth Mentoring Program

Since 2005, the Amazon Institute has offered mentoring to at risk youth aged 12 to 17. The mission of the Amazon Institute is
to provide direct-to-youth mentoring that will improve life
outcomes for vulnerable and disengaged children by developing resilience
skills, supporting the development of personal strengths, and increasing
self-sufficiency. The Amazon
Institute incorporates programming based on the principle that all young people
have a need for caring people and challenging possibilities in their lives.
Reflection, youth voice, and positive relationships with adults are experiences
considered to be important factors in producing effective student
learning. The Amazon Institute
believes that resilience is not a genetic trait that only a few “superkids”
possess. Rather, when provided
with a caring environment, high expectations and meaningful opportunities,
youth have an inborn capacity for positive transformation. The goals of our mentoring program are
to improve at-risk students attendance, state testing scores, behaviors and self-worth through caring adults who meet with their students one hour, three times a week during the school year.

Population(s) Served

The mission of the Amazon Institute is
to provide academic tutoring, enhance childhood literacy, provide creative
mentoring and service learning opportunities that improve life outcomes for at
risk and low income students. Project ¡Cambia! seeks to close the achievement
gap for Hispanic and at risk girls between the ages of 8 and 18 years by
tackling the key barriers to academic success: low academic achievement and teen pregnancy. As part of Project ¡Cambia! the Amazon
Institute will partner with schools to host on-campus programs and after school
programs that introduce girls to professional careers, provide positive female
and Latina role models and involve parents in the education decision-making
process.
