What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Food For Families
Arkansas Rice Depot provides sensible solutions to hunger through a statewide faith-based foodbank. We provide food to 312 church and community food pantries and soup kitchens. Unlike most other foodbanks, we do not charge our food pantries for the food they receive.
Food For Kids
Free food and backpacks are provided through our Food For Kids program to over 600 public schools in Arkansas. A backpack filled with simple to prepare kid friendly food is given to children who are experiencing problems at school due to hunger at home. This program that was conceived by Arkansas Rice Depot in 1995 has now been replicated in over 40 states throughout the United States. In the 2007-2008 school year we were able to help feed 23,700 students in the state of Arkansas.
Food For Seniors
At least 50 pounds of food and household supplies are delivered each month to homebound senior citizens through our Food For Seniors program. Many cannot afford much needed medicine, and struggle to keep utilities on. After rent and utilities, the average money left for our seniors to buy groceries, clothing, medicine and all other needs totals $79, and some have only $25. This program currently consists of delivery to 50 seniors in the Pulaski County area, with plans to expand in 2009.
Arkansas Rice Depot Disaster Center
Free food and relief supplies are distributed through our Arkansas Disaster Relief Center to any Arkansas hunger agency or community assisting disaster victims. The disaster may be a house fire that affects one family, or a tornado that affects hundreds. Over 250,000 pounds of food was distributed to victims of floods, fires, and tornadoes in 2008.
Simple Pleasures
Arkansas Rice Depot also operates a gift shop both in our headquarters and online at www.ricedepot.org. We have developed a line of 14 gourmet rice, soup and chili mixes, that are packaged by volunteers. We also make gift baskets. These items make wonderful gifts that also share your values as you give a tasty gift. All funds raised by the sale of our Simple Pleasures gifts are used to purchase food to feed the hungry of Arkansas.
